πΊπΈ SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 WE WILL NEVER FORGET πΊπΈ
Today, we pause to remember one of the darkest days in our nationβs history.
On September 11, 2001, our country was forever changed. Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost, and countless families were left without their loved ones. Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice were 343 firefighters, along with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and other first responders who ran toward danger while thousands of others were trying to escape it.
Those firefighters knew exactly what they were walking into. They climbed stairwell after stairwell carrying heavy equipment, helping people find their way out, and continuing upward while others were coming down. They did it because someone needed help. They did it because that is what firefighters do.
Many never came back down.
The courage shown that day is something the fire service will carry forever. The number 343 is more than a number. It represents fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, friends, and fellow firefighters who answered their final call while serving others.
We also remember those who survived September 11 but carried the effects of that day with them for the rest of their lives. In the years since, many firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, recovery workers, and others who worked at Ground Zero have lost their lives or battled serious illnesses connected to their service.
For those of us in the fire service today, September 11 is a reminder of the responsibility that comes with putting on the gear. Whether you serve a city with millions of people or a small rural community like ours, the mission remains the same: when someone calls for help, we answer.
Today, the Robert Lee Volunteer Fire Department remembers every innocent life lost, every first responder who made the ultimate sacrifice, every family who never got to welcome their loved one home, and everyone who stepped forward to help their fellow Americans during the days, weeks, months, and years that followed.
May we never forget the courage.
May we never forget the sacrifice.
May we never forget the families.
May we never forget how our country came together.
343 firefighters answered their final alarm on September 11, 2001. Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
