Such a good read about small towns and how we support our VFDs. Those fish fry’s and auctions are fun, but they are also very important to the safety of our communities!
A fire truck costs about as much as a house. Out in rural Texas, a lot of them got paid for with plates of barbecue and chicken dinners. đźš’
This is how it actually works in a town that cannot float a bond big enough. The department picks a Saturday. The engine gets backed out onto the apron and the bay turns into a dining hall, eight folding tables under strings of bare bulbs. Somebody's family recipe goes into two big aluminum roasters. Plates go for ten or twelve dollars. There is a raffle jar on a card table by the door with a sh***un or a side of beef or a quilt somebody made, and that jar often brings in more than the food does.
They do it for the gear. Turnout coats run well over a thousand dollars apiece and expire on a schedule. Air packs cost more than a car. Hose, radios, a thermal camera, the extraction tools you need when a car goes into the ditch on the county road. Every piece of it has a price, and in a lot of places the fundraiser is the line item. 🤝
So when you pass one of those signs for a fish fry at the fire hall, that is not a social event with a side of fundraising. That is a town quietly buying the equipment that will show up at somebody's worst night. The plate is twelve dollars and it is the best deal in the county.
