Scatter Creek Eagle Nest Bald Eagle nest along Scatter Creek in Rochester, WA This bald eagle nest is located on private property on the north side of Scatter Creek in Rochester, WA.

If you know where to look it is visible on the hill across the wildlife area from 183rd Avenue. For years after we moved here, eagles would frequently come and perch in the tall trees in our pasture during the winter and spring. We thought the tallest tree looked perfect as a nesting site to us, but it was not until May 2020 that they started bringing in sticks and building a nest. In November of that year, when they returned from wherever they go in the summer, they resumed building. In late March 2021, they started nesting and the first eaglet was hatched in early May.

It’s been pretty quiet for a couple days now, so it seems the eagles have left for the season.

Godspeed, Blaze! Leo and Luna should be back around November.

Sometime in the coming days I’ll send the drone up for a look at the nest.

We haven't caught sight of Blaze flying again yet, but we did get some more perching and flapping pictures this afternoon.

We aren’t sure if Blaze has flown again since the time we witnessed - but we haven’t been watching all the time! He is doing some winging today. We will try to keep an eye out and get some pictures if he/she takes off again!

Blaze has fledged! While we were not watching, of course. We heard him calling from another tree down the road, and it took a while to finally spot him. After a couple of short flights from tree to tree, he finally made it back to the nest where the parents had been quietly waiting for him the whole time, and they all had some lunch.

Blaze has fledged! This is a pretty rough video… But bear with me - I was doing the best I can as he keeps flying in and out of the frame. I was shooting right into the sun so I couldn’t see my screen, or whether I had him in frame, or focused! At the end he landed in the neighbors tree and is resting there for now. We came in to take a break. If we see him moving again we will try to get some more updates until he gets home. The parents are waiting quietly over in the nest. they’re not calling him or worrying too much about him yet. They’re fairly hands-off parents: “Figure it out son! Just be back before the street lights come on!”

As usual, Bruce took some better pics with the good camera he will post later! 🙂

UPDATE: We missed it with the camera, but Blaze is now safely back in the nest and has had some dinner 🙂

We saw Blaze doing a bit of flapping and stretching on the upper branches, but about the time we got out there with the camera, a parent arrived with some lunch. It appears to be a catfish... not sure where they got that around here. A full stomach will put the kibosh on any more activity for much of the evening now.

Feeding time! Blaze talking a lot as parent comes in with a little catfish for dinner! :-)
iphone video for now... Bruce took better pictures with the good camera which he will post later. :-)

Blaze has started to move out of the nest to the upper branches. Another step closer to branching and then flying!

Blaze is getting big! He's probably only a matter of days from moving out of the nest to the upper branches. The parents have started leaving him in the nest unattended for long periods... sort of. They can still be seen perched on other trees in the neighborhood, still close enough to keep an eye out for trouble.
