As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we celebrate the countless ways Latino communities strengthen our economy, support our neighborhoods, and enrich our culture. At a time when immigrant families are facing attacks by the federal administration, uplifting the Latino community means more than recognizing its contributions. It means standing up for our neighbors, defending their rights, and making clear that we are stronger because of immigrants.

Today, I was proud to celebrate 40 years of The Ibero-American Development Corporation, whose commitment to advocating for the Latino community and expanding opportunities has made a lasting difference in our region.

Last night, I joined The Children’s Agenda to discuss the challenges behind chronic absenteeism in schools and explore solutions informed by experts and lived experiences. Addressing the barriers that keep students out of the classroom is essential to supporting their success and strengthening our community.

That’s why I’m proud to co-sponsor S134, the Solutions Not Suspensions Act, which emphasizes supportive, restorative approaches to school discipline rather than relying on suspensions for minor infractions. By addressing the underlying challenges students face and keeping them connected to learning, we can help more students succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Over the weekend, I joined the Pittsford community to celebrate the unveiling of Terrafly, a beautiful new sculpture at King’s Bend Park generously donated by the Dogra Art Foundation. Created to celebrate life and unity, Terrafly offers residents a place to sit, reflect, connect with one another, and celebrate what brings us together. Women who break barriers create pathways for the women who come after them.

It was a privilege to provide Venus Williams with a Senate proclamation at the YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County 20th Annual Empowering Women Luncheon.

Throughout her career, Venus Williams has been a prominent advocate for gender equality and equal pay, using her platform to challenge inequities and help advance greater recognition and opportunity for women in sports and beyond. Her work reflects the mission of the YWCA, which for more than 160 years has stood at the forefront of movements for women's empowerment, civil rights, pay equity, violence prevention, health care, and social justice

Thank you to the YWCA for continuing to create opportunities for women and girls in our community, and to Venus Williams for inspiring the next generation of women to lead, achieve, and break barriers of their own.

I stand with Jane Doe. In NYS, I voted to pass S10632, which would prohibit the use of intoxication of the victim as a defense in s*x crimes. But that’s not enough.

I’m joining women legislators across the 19 states where intoxication laws can create gaps in accountability for s*xual assault to protect survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and make sure intoxication is never a free pass for s*xual assault, no matter what state you call home. Intoxication is not consent. And the law must reflect that.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Regular screenings and early detection can save lives. Here in Rochester and across New York, organizations like the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester and the NYS Cancer Services Program connect individuals and families with education, screening resources, support, and other vital services.

Access to quality health care should never depend on who you are, where you live, or what you can afford. This month, and every month, I’ll continue working to expand access to care and support for our communities.

Over the weekend, my office joined the National Alliance on Mental Health of Rochester and community members for a morning of connection, hope, and wellness. NAMIWalks brings together people living with mental health conditions, families, providers, advocates, and community supporters to raise awareness and strengthen the network of care in our community. As Chair of the Senate Mental Health Committee, I'm proud to partner with organizations like NAMI and remain committed to making sure New Yorkers experiencing a mental health crisis can access compassionate, community-based care.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, support survivors, and recommit ourselves to building communities where everyone can live safely and free from violence.

Today, my office joined Willow Domestic Violence Center for the release of their annual Domestic Violence Report to the Community, which provides important data and insight into local trends, community needs, and the work still ahead.

We must continue using data, listening to advocates and survivors, and investing in the services that help people find safety, justice, healing, and hope.
