An honor to be welcomed into the legacy of 1039 WDKX, one of Rochester’s most iconic and influential radio stations.

Today, The Black Republican Club of Rochester President Lavelle Lewis and Vice President Emily Samantha were honored to be invited to tour WDKX and experience firsthand the history behind this legendary station.

Hearing Andre share the stories of his parents, their vision, and the hard work that built WDKX was both inspiring and humbling. Their legacy is a testament to what determination, entrepreneurship, and a commitment to community can accomplish.

Known as the station of Douglass, King, and Malcolm, 1039 WDKX continues to celebrate Black culture, amplify diverse voices, and build bridges through music and meaningful conversations among people of all ethnicities and backgrounds. We are proud that the Black Republican Club of Rochester was welcomed into that tradition today.

Thank you again, Mr. Langston, for the invitation, the warm welcome, and all you do to preserve and advance this remarkable Rochester legacy.

Booker T. Washington understood that freedom without education leaves generations unprepared to reach their full potential.

More than 150 years after emancipation, Rochester faces a literacy crisis that demands accountability. When only 19% of RCSD students in grades 3–8 are proficient in English Language Arts, we must ask a difficult question: How can we call this progress when so many children are being left behind?

Public education is entrusted with preparing our children for the future. That responsibility cannot be ignored, excused, or passed along to the next generation.

The Black Republican Club of Rochester believes every child deserves the opportunity to read, learn, and succeed—and every parent deserves the right to choose the educational path that best serves their child.

Our children cannot afford another generation of broken promises. Education must be about results, accountability, and opportunity.

HOCHUL BREAKS FROM TEACHERS’ UNION

For years, New York’s political establishment has faced pressure from powerful teachers’ unions whenever school choice enters the conversation. Now, Governor Kathy Hochul has opted New York into a federal education tax-credit scholarship program despite strong opposition from NYSUT and the United Federation of Teachers.

This is a significant development. The question is whether political leaders will prioritize the demands of union leadership or expand educational opportunities for families who want more choices for their children.

Parents should not have to accept a one-size-fits-all approach to education. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their ZIP code or household income.

For the Black community, educational opportunity is an economic issue, a civil rights issue, and a question of whether parents have meaningful options when their children are struggling.

The real test will be whether this decision translates into tangible opportunities for New York families. We should judge the policy by its results: student achievement, access to tutoring, scholarship availability, and whether disadvantaged families can actually benefit.

The priority must be the children—not the political influence of any union.

Saritha for New York did not disappoint! She demonstrated why she is a strong candidate for NYS Attorney General.

Thank you to everyone who joined The Black Republican Club of Rochester to watch the debate and support the conversation.

Beyond the debate, the turnout and new faces were a reminder of why community outreach matters. We must continue creating spaces where conservatives feel welcome to engage, share their perspectives, and connect with others who share their values.

Our club remains committed to growing our community presence, engaging new voices, and supporting local businesses like Big Daddy BBQ & Catering.
