The Center for Community Engagement (formerly the Rochester Center for Community Leadership) educates students to become engaged citizens and leaders capable of effecting positive social change in their communities. Through sustainable university and community partnerships, the Center develops initiatives that cultivate the skills, experiences and resources necessary to achieve innovative solutions to complex societal issues. The Center coordinates initiatives in the areas of leadership, civic engagement and community service, and connects students with communities on campus, throughout Rochester, across the country and around the world. Many students know Henry Padrón from his Latine activism and co-ownership of Hipocampo Books on South Ave. But the Padrón Papers also reveal much more about his years as a teacher in the Rochester City School District, his poetry, and his work with the Young Lords Party in New York City. All these materials are now available for students and researchers to study.

Students in the “Artist as Citizen: Building Creative Communities” class are asking campus stakeholders and alumni to participate in their “Campus Utopia” project by answering the question, “What would a Campus Utopia look like if you had unlimited imagination and resources?” They are collecting as many ideas as possible and then building a model of this campus utopia in the AsIs Gallery at Sage in Nov. The ideas can be as idealistic as you’d like (i.e. the gondola from the med center to Sage), pragmatic (a weekly bus that goes to ethnic grocery stores), tangible or intangible. The URochester Center for Community Health & Prevention presents a FREE film screening and community panel discussion of In Her Shoes. While confronting stories of sexual abuse, violence, and addiction, women find the confidence and courage to envision taking their next step.

Followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Diane Morse, MD, associate professor of Environmental Medicine & Public Health Sciences and associate director of the office of Health Equity Research. The panel will feature:

Student volunteers will serve as mentors and tutors in algebra classrooms within the Rochester City School District. Through orientation, classroom engagement, and reflective seminars, participants will contribute to student success in Algebra, explore the broader contexts of education, and develop their own sense of agency as community members.

Learning Experiences:
Student volunteers will explore the cultural, social, and economic contexts that shape educational experiences. They will approach this work with humility, reflecting on their own biases, assumptions, and positionality throughout the program.
Student volunteers will reflect on their own mathematical identities and sense of agency as contributors to their community.
Student volunteers will enhance their knowledge of effective teaching strategies, including fostering conceptual understanding, promoting problem-solving skills, and encouraging a growth mindset.

Commitment:
Preparation: approximately 3 hours per semester
Participate in one initial orientation event.
Classroom Engagement: approximately 2 hours per week
Attend one Algebra class per week, on the same day and same time each day.
Support the classroom teacher as needed, including but not limited to answering student questions and working with individual and small groups of students within the classroom.
Reflection: approximately 4 hours per semester
Participate in 3 reflective seminars through each academic semester.
