October 16th: Tiger Battalion conducted a Movement to Contact lane at lab.

Movement to Contact, or MTC, emulates a scenario where a platoon is caught off guard by the enemy and must react quickly with precision and violence of action. MTC lanes stress the importance of staying vigilant and maintaining clear communication with your fellow soldiers as info on the enemy is scarce and contact could be made at any time.

Similar to most labs, the MS3s received more leadership opportunities preparing them for camp, while MS1s and MS2 were further exposed to offensive operations.

September 27th, 2026. FTX Day 3

Both Tiger Battalion and SUNY Brockport Army ROTC conducted their final day of FTX and their joint contracting ceremony.

Contracting is one of the most integral steps in ROTC as it solidifies your role as an ROTC cadet and a future army officer. Tiger Bn would like to congratulate cadets Jenkins, Johnson, Clemente, Januschka, Steffens, Bozard, Billings, Ojiba, Ryan and Waldon on their first step to becoming a US Army officer!

In addition to our contracting ceremony, Tiger Bn also continued our tradition of placing the Tiger Bn patch on our cadets after their first FTX. Participating in FTX is an essential part of ROTC, building your warrior and leadership skills and allowing cadets to see what they learn in the classroom and at lab, firsthand. Completing FTX demonstrates cadets are prepared and ready for what ROTC has in store for them.

October 5th - 7th, 2026.
The Tiger Battalion, Alpha Company, conducted a diagnostic Army Fitness Test (AFT) this week in order to gauge the strength and weaknesses of the cadets. The AFT consists of 5 exercises: Max Deadlift, 2 minute max pushups, The Sprint Drag Carry, max plank, and a 2 mile run. Each workout takes a tremendous amount of energy and effort, yet our cadets completed all of them with great scores!

September 26th, 2026.

The second day of the Tiger Battalion’s FTX commenced at 0600, where 1st Platoon and 2nd Platoons leadership started planning their first Situational Training Exercise (STX) lane.

A STX lane is the best way for MS3s to practice being in leadership positions, where not every variable is controlled, meaning they need to be able to think quickly on their feet and plan to meet time hacks. MS2s and 1s also got to experience the feeling of being part of a platoon formation and familiarized themselves with the different battle drills: Attack, Raid, Move To Contact, and Ambush. After each STX lane, debriefs are held to discuss what went good and what could have gone better, facilitated by the MS4s. After all 4 lanes were conducted, the platoons secured their respective patrol bases and hunkered down for the night.

This morning, Tiger battalion conducted its annual Mog or Mogadishu Mile.

The Mog Mile is a tradition that celebrates and remembers the fallen soldiers who lost their lives in the battle of Mogadishu, 1993, where 18 American lives were lost and more than 70 were wounded. The mile symbolizes the determination that was displayed when the remaining soldiers had to escape on foot.

Tiger BN finds it imperative to continue traditions such as these, in which we remember those who lost their lives, working to keep our nation safe. Today also goes to show, as cadets and members of our military that we both have each other’s backs and to never leave a fallen comrade.

September 25th, 2026.
The Tiger Battalion, comprised of A Company from RIT and B Company from Brockport, started their Field Training Exercise at Fort Drum. The first day consisted of Weapons draw, where the cadets formed into two platoon sized elements and were assigned one of three platform: An M4, an M249, or an M240 Bravo. Then they took a 1.5 mile ruck march to the training site, full gear on, to truly begin their weekend of training. What followed was a round robin of warrior skills for the MS1s and MS2s, where they learned how to handle their weapons, how to provide aid to their battle buddies, how to use an ASIP radio, and how to use face camo to blend into their surroundings. MS3s used this time to run through the missions that they would conduct the following day. All of this, was facilitated by the MS4s, who were teaching, mentoring, and training the cadets below them in order to help them get better.

This past week, Tiger Battalion cadets led a lab focused on the fundamentals of Patrol Bases (PBs) and Objective Rally Points (ORPs).

ORPs and PBs are tactical formations that allow an infantry platoon to halt, plan, re-evaluate, and prepare before moving onto an objective. Mastering these foundational skills early ensures our newer cadets build the tactical skills and understanding necessary for future leadership roles in the field.

Our MS3’s and MS4’s also got more action, demonstrating their exceptional leadership, through teaching and refining the skills within the MS2 and MS1 classes.

Today, the Tiger Battalion honored the memory of those lost on September 11 during our annual 9/11 Memorial PT session. Led by our Professor of Military Science, LTC Sim.

Cadets completed a stair-climb workout at the Gordon Field House, carrying weights and rucks to signify the sacrifice and endurance demanded on that fateful day.

Taking time to reflect on the tragedy from 25 years ago serves as a vital reminder of the strength found in unity and community. During his address, LTC Sim highlighted how individual actions worked to create immense impacts, pointing to the selflessness of the first responders who saved countless lives. As future military leaders, we carry these lessons with us striving to embody that same commitment to service, selfless sacrifice, and resilience every single day.

Tiger BN would also like to extend our thanks to Paul Besch-Turner for his incredible photos!

During last week’s leadership lab, Tiger BN conducted a series of fundamental battle drills to both introduce our MS I cadets to field operations while sharpening the tactical skills of our MS IIs and MS IIIs.

Battle drills are standardized, collective actions designed to make immediate responses second nature. Mastering these fundamentals is essential for cadets working to become officers.

These exercises provide critical hands-on leadership opportunities for upperclassmen by instructing younger cadets and applying tactical knowledge, our cadets get practice with decision-making, and using clear communication, in a variety of situations creating better and more effective leaders.

The Tiger Battalion’s Ranger Challenge team recently commenced its rigorous selection process with the first phase of tryouts: the Army Fitness Test (AFT).

The Ranger Challenge is a premier military skills competition that tests ROTC battalions against one another in events demanding peak athleticism, endurance, and teamwork. To ensure candidates are prepared for this caliber of competition, the Tiger Battalion utilizes the AFT, the standard physical assessment of the U.S. Army to accurately measure the baseline physical readiness of all prospective team members.

Taking on the AFT and trying out for Ranger Challenge is no easy feat. We are incredibly proud of every cadet who rose to the occasion and pushed their limits. The Tiger Battalion is excited to see the final team put in the work this semester and excel in competition.
