Big news yesterday! Local library directors on the Illinois side, including Rock Island, have banded together to launch fundraising for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Rock Island County. The initial fundraising goal is $36,200, with $10,000 in pledges already received. This unique county-wide collaboration of libraries is making it work.
The news conference was packed with local educators, early childhood advocates, local government officials, foundations, and library folks, and others excited about this opportunity to make sure every child has access to books in their homes. Speakers included Angela Campbell, Rock Island Library director, Audra Cottrell, Community Engagement Coordinator, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Illinois, Teonna Dowell, Early Head Start Program Director, Early Head Start Child Care Partnership, SAL Community Services, Julie Larson, President & CEO, YWCA Quad Cities, Senator Mike Halpin, and Bianca Sierra, East Moline Public Library Director
Imagination Library requires a 501c3 fiscal agent partner for local fundraising, and we're pleased to say that our Rock Island Public Library Foundation board and their director, Kathy Lelonek, stepped forward to make this announcement possible! RIPLF is holding Imagination Library donations in a separate account, with area library directors and local volunteers on fundraising legwork.
The Rock Island County collaboration raises the $15.60 local portion of the annual cost for each child, with those local donations leveraged by the State of Illinois 50 percent match. It costs $which covers the other portion of the $31.20 annual cost per child to deliver a carefully selected age-appropriate book per month for enrolled children ages birth to five. Once the fundraising goal is reached, sign up availability will be announced.
The faster we reach our goal, the better! Continuing fundraising will be necessary as more children sign up for the program. How to donate: By check to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Rock Island County, P.O. Box 4723, Rock Island, IL 61201 or online via https://donate.imaginationlibrary.com/. Check “I would like to designate to a local program partner” and choose “IL-Rock Island County.”
Our thanks to the Quad City Botanical Center for their gracious assistance in providing a neutral location for more than 50 members of our community to gather for this exciting announcement!
