Clayton, NC. April 12th, 1865. At the corner of O'Neil Street and First Street, Union General William T. Sherman meets emissaries sent by Governor Zebulon Vance concerning the surrender of Raleigh. Vance had been concerned that Raleigh could see the same destruction that seemed to follow Sherman's army across the American South, and hoped that it's surrender would spare it from that destruction. Sherman briefly detained these emissaries, allowing them to return the next day from his headquarters here in Clayton with the understanding that he would be willing to work towards that goal. He also largely spared Clayton itself from any significant destruction as he knew the end of the war was near. The delay caused a bit of panic with Governor Vance, who immediately fled Raleigh, knowing that the Union Army was just a short distance away. Ultimately, Union Cavalry under General Judson Kilpatrick agreed to the surrender as they approached the city and were approached by the mayor who was also sent by Vance.. Large portions of Sherman's army stayed in the vicinity of Clayton as the army gradually made its way into Raleigh over the 12th and 13th.
