This week is National School Bus Safety Week. Millions of children across the country ride on school buses every day, but the greatest threat to a child’s safety is not riding inside the bus, but while navigating the 10-foot "Danger Zone" around the bus when boarding or exiting.

Always remember:

Flashing Yellow Lights: Indicate that the bus is preparing to stop. Drivers should slow down and prepare their vehicles for a complete stop.

Flashing Red Lights & Stop-Arm: Signal an absolute law to stop immediately. Drivers must remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.

Never Pass on the Right: Passing a school bus on the right side—where children enter and exit—is strictly illegal and highly dangerous.

Eliminate Distractions: Keep eyes on the road and mobile devices put away, especially during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.

Let’s all do our part to keep our kids safe!

ROCK ISLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT HOSTS PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP OFF FOR DRUG TAKE BACK DAY - OCT 24TH

A week from tomorrow, on Saturday, October 24th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Rock Island Police Department, in partnership with the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Prevention Team, The C.A.U.S.E. (The Coalition Advocating for Underage Substance Elimination), and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will be one of three collection sites for the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day across Rock Island County.

This initiative addresses a critical public safety and health issue. Unused medications in the home are highly susceptible to misuse, diversion, and accidental poisoning. In April 2026, Take Back Day collected over 642,410 pounds (321 Tons) of medications nationwide, including more than 16,929 pounds in Illinois and over 300 pounds in Rock Island County.

Collection sites include:
● Rock Island Police Department
● Milan Municipal Building /Police Department
● Moline Police Department

Accepted items include prescription and over-the-counter pills and patches. V**e devices and e-cigarettes will be accepted only if batteries are removed. Liquids, inhalers, needles, and sharps will not be accepted. All locations offer convenient drive-up drop-off service. No questions asked!
