One more post about our 2026 Annual Meeting! Even though we didn't snag any amazing pics of Crystal Woodring and crew, what you see here is almost 80 people enjoying every bite of the meal she (and her family!) prepared. We are so grateful for all the ways Crystal chooses to give her time and talents to her home and her people, including this one. (Oh, and also not pictured is some amazing Strawberry Shortcake provided by Keeling's Dairy Diner.) The food alone made this gathering worth attending! 😉

At every Annual Meeting and all the days in between, ACDC purposely celebrates the good things because they are happening in our own backyard and it’s a lot more fun than discussing the headlines. I don't know about you, but I never feel better (or capable of making an impact on a national or worldwide scale) when I skim over articles and commentary being fed to me about how the world is awful and getting worse. When I stop scrolling and look outside my window, or attend a meeting full of people who care deeply about this place, or see the way our community loves our kids, I remember that that's just not the case here.

And even when things are less than awesome in AC, the truth is that we can make an impact here, in our family, home, school, church, neighborhood, and community, because *this* is our sphere of influence.

My challenge to you is to recognize how much you matter to this place, and how much you can impact AC for the better. Shut off the screens, see the good, make your corner of the world better (‘cause you can), and remember that .

We celebrate so much Good at our Annual Meeting. This year we recognized an individual who is an amazing example of the many people in our county who understand the importance of giving their time and talents to their communities.

A few years ago, Joanna Burke started a mentorship program at the Rock Port School called GuidingFlight. She didn’t have a road map, just a heart for kids and an understanding of the need for all kids to connect regularly with adults who care about them (something you hear ACDC preach regularly!). In 2024, Joanna took her vision one step further when she (along with Superintendent Rex Bollinger and School Counselor Shauna Farmer) connected with TeamMates, a multi-state program that started 35 years ago when Coach Tom Osborne established this mentorship opportunity for his UNL football players. Though she has many who support her efforts, it is mostly due to Joanna’s time and dedication that Rock Port TeamMates became the first chapter in Missouri. (We're also thrilled that after Joanna's introduction of the program to several schools in the area, Tarkio TeamMates is up and running!)

Thank you, Joanna, for all the ways you love our kids, whether through your day job or impactful volunteerism like TeamMates. Congratulations on your 2026 Outstanding Volunteer Award!

In addition to celebrating businesses at our Annual Meeting, we also love to recognize community projects that are often volunteer based, as is the case with both of this year’s Community Improvement awardees.

Early this year, Fairfax Improvement Foundation learned that they were eligible for a matching grant from The Patterson Family Foundation. On May 15, in collaboration with the Fairfax Kiwanis Club, they kicked off a 30-day fundraiser with a goal of raising $100,000 for the Fairfax School to honor the 100th anniversary of the original high school building. When all was said and done, the Patterson grant contributed a little over $37,000 of the total funds raised, which was $112,130. For those of us who struggle with math, this means that nearly $75,000 was raised from individuals here and across the country (14 different states!). Fairfax is famous for successfully raising funds for projects that matter to everyone who has ever been a part of the community.

Speaking of community efforts, Tarkio Parks & Rec never tires in their mission to bring people together, especially when it’s fun! In addition to coordinating events like Friendship Day, Chews and Cruise Night, Christmas Light Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Puzzle Party, Triathlon, and feeding people during baseball games, they also see needs in Tarkio and work to address them. In 2025 they set a goal of raising $70,000 to renovate the tennis and pickleball courts, and in May, the newly finished courts opened, bringing joy to hosts of people who use the courts regularly. Tarkio Parks & Rec is an amazing example of what a group of volunteers can do when they are passionate about their people and their community.

Congratulations to you both on your 2026 Community Improvement Awards!

We're taking time this week to share Annual Meeting highlights. Next up - Milestone Achievement Awards!

In 1987, a young dentist named David Scarbrough and his wife Jennifer moved to our beloved corner of the world and joined Dr. Cleveland’s dental practice. In 1989, the Scarbroughs purchased the practice and David L. Scarbrough DDA LLC was born! For nearly 40 years, Dr. Scarbrough and his staff have served their customers with care, professionalism, knowledge, and efficiency. Dr. Scarbrough’s love for and dedication to his patients, especially kids, is evidenced by the many individuals and families who have trusted him for decades. Thank you, Dr. Scarbrough, for all the ways you have been there for us, both in your dental practice and through your generosity to your community!

In the late 70s, a John Deere mechanic (and his wife!) moved from Burlington, Kansas, to Atchison County to work at the newly built Tarkio Equipment [John Deere dealership]. Lucky for us, in 1985, that mechanic established Fuzzy’s Harvesting Repair. Kenny Clapp initially worked out of a small shop north of Tarkio, though more often he took his uniquely outfitted truck to the field to repair tractors and combines there, a practice that was novel at the time. Around 1990, Kenny’s wife Joy joined him at new shop location and parts store on Hwy 59 south of the Y, where they served their customers for 30 years. In August 2019, Fuzzy’s returned to the place it all began, only this time he worked in a new, climate-controlled garage where the combines started coming to him! Thank you for providing excellent service and products to our ag community for over 40 years.

Ted and Vickie Simmons began Simmons MFA Service in 1976. Ted’s brother Bud worked for them in high school and after graduating and being away for couple of years, he joined them full-time in 1981. Ted had a huge heart for service, and when Bud joined, the service and business side of things grew even stronger. In 2017, Bud and his wife Lyn purchased the building from MFA and the business became Simmons Service, LLC. In 2021, our community lost Ted to cancer, but Bud has continued the family business, with Paul Whittington joining them then. Over the years, Simmons has employed several school-to-work students from both Fairfax and Tarkio High Schools, one of them being Bud’s nephew Blake, who went full-time after graduation and is now helping with the tire side of the business. For 50 years Simmons has been the epitome of small-town customer service. We can’t imagine Main Street without you!

In the late 60s, Kelly and his wife Nancy bought a few acres on Highway 136, and he started Kelly’s Welding and Repair, working out of his garage and serving customers on nights and weekends when he wasn’t working at the packing plant. His hired man was a heavy-duty 1969 International boom truck, which he still uses occasionally to this day. In 1972, he built the building you see today and went full time in his business, working 6-7 days/week. Over the years, Kelly has used his welding and repair skills on anything from farm machinery to metal templates and anchor bolts on turbine bases, and everything in between. Thank you for being such an essential part of Atchison County for over 55 years.

It’s a joy for us to acknowledge these cornerstone Atchison County businesses with Milestone Achievement Awards. THANK YOU for so many decades of awesome!

Our next award (Business Expansion) went to Perry Plumbing and Septic LLC!

Perry Plumbing began in 2018 as a side business for Kade and Kaylee Perry, where they primarily handled service calls. Over the years, they added a camera and locater, descaling and epoxy lining services, an excavator, and septic installations. In 2024, they created a new LLC called Perry Plumbing and Septic, in January this year, they established a physical location in Tarkio, and this spring they purchased their own pump truck. Perry Plumbing and Septic has been diversifying and expanding since they started, and we are so glad to recognize their hard work and success.

Congratulations on your Business Expansion Award!
