Sweetwater County HAM Radio Operators Support Scouts Jamboree-on-the-Air

Sweetwater County, Wyoming — 17 October 2026 — Today, Sweetwater County amateur radio operators are supporting Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) by providing Scouts with hands-on radio education and an introduction to amateur radio communications.

This international Scouting event connects Scouts from around the world through amateur radio, helping them learn about radio technology, communication skills, and the importance of staying connected. Through this activity, Scouts have the opportunity to experience radio communications firsthand and explore a valuable resource for emergency preparedness and disaster response.

Amateur radio operators play an important role in community preparedness by providing an alternative means of communication when traditional communication systems are disrupted.

Sweetwater County is proud to support youth education, community engagement, and the development of future generations of emergency communications volunteers.

Preparedness starts with being informed—and it starts with you.

Another great night of training with the Sweetwater County Emergency Response Team!

Tonight, our team focused on foot and ankle anatomy, common injuries, and hands-on techniques for immobilizing the ankle using a variety of methods. We also discussed the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) and its role in the initial management of sprains and other soft-tissue injuries.

A big part of emergency response is learning to adapt when resources are limited. During tonight’s practical exercises, we improvised by using Kerlix gauze rolls to simulate a situation where ACE wraps were unavailable or had been depleted. This gave our team an opportunity to think outside the box, practice resourcefulness, and explore alternative ways to secure immobilization materials when standard supplies may not be readily available.

These hands-on training sessions help build confidence, reinforce practical skills, and prepare our team to respond effectively—even when conditions aren't ideal. Preparedness means not only knowing what to do, but also being able to adapt when circumstances change.

Train together. Learn together. Adapt together. Serve together.
