***New support for veteran su***de prevention in southwest Wyoming.***

Southwest Counseling Service has received $423,196 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to strengthen su***de prevention efforts for veterans in Sweetwater County and surrounding communities.

Awarded through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Su***de Prevention Grant Program, the funding supports one year of services beginning September 30, 2026.

The program emphasizes reaching veterans who are not yet connected with VA care and helping them access practical assistance and support in the communities where they live.

โ€œVeterans often face challenges that are difficult to manage alone, and they may not know where to turn for help,โ€ said John Grossnickle, SCS Executive Director. โ€œThis grant gives us an opportunity to reach those individuals earlier, understand what they need, and help them stay connected with care and support.โ€

SCS plans to prioritize Sweetwater County, including Rock Springs, Green River, and surrounding rural communities, with additional outreach to Evanston and Rawlins as participant needs and program capacity permit.

We are preparing to implement the program in coordination with VA. Weโ€™ll share details about services, eligibility, and how veterans and families can connect as implementation plans are finalized.

The program honors Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox, an Army veteran remembered for his generosity and kindness who died by su***de in 2020.

If you or someone you know needs immediate crisis support, call 988.

You canโ€™t always see when someone is struggling.

Mental health challenges donโ€™t have a certain look. They can exist alongside a job, a family, a smile, a sense of humor, and a life that seems perfectly fine from the outside.

The same is true of therapy. You donโ€™t have to be in crisis. You donโ€™t have to have everything falling apart. You donโ€™t have to wait until things become too much to handle on your own.

During Mental Illness Awareness Week, we hope you know youโ€™re not alone, and asking for help is about taking care of yourself.

You donโ€™t have to look like youโ€™re struggling to deserve support.

**Big news for mental health care in Sweetwater County.**

Southwest Counseling Service has received an initial $1,046,926 federal award from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to launch the Sweetwater County Assisted Outpatient Treatment Expansion Project.

Approximately $2.69 million in federal funding is anticipated over the five-year project, subject to continued federal funding and satisfactory performance. The project is expected to serve 325 adults who have experienced repeated mental health crises, hospitalizations, difficulty staying connected to treatment, or co-occurring disorders.

Assisted outpatient treatment is a civil, court-connected approach that coordinates treatment and support for people with serious mental illness while they continue living in the community.

Through the new project, SCS will connect outpatient mental health treatment with intensive case management, psychiatric care, medication management, peer and family support, transportation, and coordination with medical and social services.

โ€œToo often, people with serious mental illness come into contact with the system during a crisis, receive immediate help, and then struggle to stay connected to the services that can help them remain stable in the community,โ€ said Melissa Wray-Marchetti, SCS Finance Director. โ€œThis project gives us an opportunity to build a more coordinated system of care for those individuals and their families, working alongside our community partners to help people stay connected to care and support.โ€

The project will also help SCS and its community partners build the local infrastructure and long-term partnerships needed to sustain assisted outpatient treatment in Sweetwater County. The initiative is designed to improve treatment engagement and community stability, with the goal of reducing emergency detentions, psychiatric hospitalizations, and repeated crisis-system involvement.

The five-year project began September 30, 2026, and will continue through September 2031.

What keeps you grounded when life feels uncertain?

Sometimes itโ€™s a quiet moment by the river. A prayer. A conversation with someone who understands. Helping another person. Remembering what matters most.

Spiritual wellness looks different for everyone. It may involve faith, or it may center on meaning, values, nature, creativity, or connection. You donโ€™t have to be religious to explore what gives your life purpose.

And you donโ€™t have to feel hopeful every day to belong in that conversation.

Spiritual wellness doesnโ€™t mean ignoring pain, forcing gratitude, or having life figured out. Sometimes it means finding something that helps you take the next step:

A belief you return to.
A person you can lean on.
A community where you belong.
A reason to keep going.

Today, take a quiet moment to notice what keeps you grounded and consider making a little more room for it.

When was the last time you enjoyed a quiet moment and didn't immediately reach for your phone?

Our phones keep us connected, but they also fill almost every empty space in our day. Waiting in line. Eating lunch. Sitting in the car. Getting ready for bed. Even spending time with the people we care about.

A digital detox doesn't have to mean giving up technology or going off-grid for days at a time. It just means being intentional. Pay attention to how much you're using it, create a little distance from the constant noise, and be more selective about where your attention goes.

Start small. Try putting the phone away during a meal. Take a walk without headphones. Turn off a few unnecessary notifications. Maybe give yourself 30 screen-free minutes before bed. Let yourself be bored for a minute.

Then notice what happens when you have a little more room.

Maybe you'll find space: For rest. For movement. For creativity. For the people around you. Or maybe just for a quiet moment with yourself.

Support for your next first step.

Thinking about getting help, but not sure what happens next?

Maybe youโ€™re not sure what kind of help you need. Maybe you have questions about cost, insurance or confidentiality. Or maybe youโ€™re wondering whether what youโ€™re going through is even โ€œserious enoughโ€ to reach out.

At Southwest Counseling Service, getting started begins with a conversation about what youโ€™re experiencing, what youโ€™d like to change, and what kind of support may be right for you.

You donโ€™t have to diagnose yourself. You donโ€™t have to wait for a crisis. And you donโ€™t have to have everything figured out before reaching out.

Sometimes the next step is simply saying,

Sometimes prevention looks like a community-wide conversation. Sometimes itโ€™s simply making sure someone has the right resource at the right time.

These are just a few of the ways our Prevention team works throughout the year to help make Sweetwater County safer and healthier.

โ€œThereโ€™s probably not a single day that I come to work that I donโ€™t have a conversation about su***de.โ€

For Southwest Counseling Service Prevention Specialist Jayda Gatley, su***de prevention doesnโ€™t begin and end with Su***de Prevention Month.

Based right here at SCS, our prevention specialists work alongside the Sweetwater County Prevention Coalition to connect schools, businesses, community organizations, and residents with prevention education, training, and resources throughout the year.

That includes taking su***de-awareness education directly into local workplaces, providing resources to schools, offering free su***de-prevention training to community organizations, and helping connect people with resources before distress becomes a crisis.

Itโ€™s prevention and treatment working side by side, and itโ€™s a part of what we do at Southwest Counseling Service that you may not know about.
