East Broad Top Railroad Experience America's Industrial Past at the East Broad Top Railroad National Historic Landmark.
(486)

150 years ago, the East Broad Top was among the earliest railroads in America to try a revolutionary new technology: narrow gauge. Today it is the oldest narrow-gauge railroad anywhere in the United States and the last narrow gauge common carrier east of the Rocky Mountains. When the EBT suspended freight service in 1956, its crews simply went home, leaving a time capsule that the Smithsonian has described as one of the most intact 19th century industrial sites in the country. Saved from scrapping by the Kovalchick family, the EBT was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Preserved today by the EBT Foundation, Inc., we welcome visitors from around the world to sample this monument to early railroading and our industrial heritage. The EBT Foundation was created for the sole purpose of restoring the East Broad Top Railroad to working condition while maintaining the historical integrity of the railroad, railyard, and surrounding historical buildings. The EBT Foundation has an ambitious vision for the railroad's future, which is to preserve it as an operating National Historic Landmark.

🚂🍂This Saturday, October 10, Ladies of Steam is headed to East Broad Top Railroad for our Steam-Power Workshop!

Ever wished someone would simply say, “Come on, let me show you,” and teach you how these incredible machines work? This is that kind of day. ❤️

Spend the day learning hands-on with an incredible group of women of steam, asking questions, building confidence, and getting up close with steam traction engines.

And we’ll finish the day with a steam train excursion behind Locomotive #16 through the beautiful fall colors of Pennsylvania. 🍂🚂

Men are welcome, too! We want this knowledge shared!

Nicole will be teaching alongside Michele, Erin, Susan, Shelley, and other incredible Ladies of Steam.
As one steam student share...
“Nicole's presentation was my favorite part of steam school because they were well thought-out, she had nice visual aids and she is skilled at presenting.” ~ Paul

If you’ve been thinking about coming, this is your final call! ❤️

So, what exactly is the Ladies of Steam event?
It’s a hands-on steam-power workshop at the East Broad Top,not just a demonstration and not just a train ride.
On October 10, participants will spend the day learning directly from the Ladies of Steam and the EBT crew, with hands-on experience around vintage steam equipment, a steam engine demonstration and our Master Mechanic’s Boiler Talk.
You’ll also get an up-close look at the steam locomotives and the people who keep them operating.
Then, after the workshop, the day concludes with a nine-mile ride behind Locomotive No. 16 through the Aughwick Valley.
The experience is limited to 40 participants to keep it personal and hands-on, and includes a boxed lunch, commemorative photo and special souvenir.
If you've ever wanted to do more than simply watch steam in action, this is what the Ladies of Steam workshop is all about.

East Broad Top Railroad Archives and Special Collections

Over the last five years, the East Broad Top Archives and Special Collections has been fortunate enough to be entrusted to steward many significant photographic collections. October’s digital exhibit features a recently donated collection by avid rail photography collector Arnold Menke. Menke is one of the generous donors whose contributions have enriched the archives and are now accessible to the public. To view the new exhibit, please visit the Archives’ Digital Catalog and click on the “What’s New?” "https://ebtarchives.catalogaccess.com/exhibits?search=&page=1&size=50&withImages=false" tab.

EBTF.2025.25 features print photographs, black-and-white negatives, and color positives of scenes from the Common Carrier and Kovalchick Tourist Railroad eras. This collection includes images of a variety of rolling stock, an EBT Transit Co. coach, and freight and passenger trains along the line, spanning nearly sixty years of EBT history.

EBTF.2025.25 was not the first collection that Menke donated to the EBT Archives. In 2024, Menke gave a series of 119 black-and-white negatives of largely Common carrier era images (EBTF.2024.31). We encourage you to explore this rewarding collection as well.

The archives thank Mr. Arnold Menke again for his stewardship and continued generosity.

The EBT Archives is a conjoined operating unit between the EBT Foundation and the Friends of the East Broad Top. Thank you for your continued support to protect, preserve, and provide access to the EBT Foundation and Friends of the EBT collections!
