BREAKING — We are heartbroken to share the news that a Durham firefighter died in the line of duty this morning while battling a building fire in the 400 block of Marly Road near Highway 70 in Southeast Durham.

Two other firefighters were injured and transported to the hospital. They are expected to survive.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Durham Fire Department, the firefighter’s family and loved ones, and the two injured firefighters.

We stand with the entire Durham community as we mourn this tragic loss.

We would like to send a congratulations to Rescue Member Cooper Allen for his achievement. We wish you the best!

Over the weekend, several acts of violence occurred in our community involving students from our schools. While there is no direct indication of a threat to our schools or students, you may notice an increased law enforcement and security presence on campuses out of an abundance of caution.

Families are reminded of the following safety procedures:

• All visitors should check in at the front office when entering a school.

• Anyone checking a student out of school must be listed as an authorized person and present a photo ID.

We are working closely with local law enforcement agencies as they investigate to ensure these incidents remain separate from our schools.

Evening history. Over to Richmond County and a news clipping from April 15, 1975. That's Tommy West giving a check to Captain Bradley McInnis of the Richmond County Rescue Squad, during a fundraiser to raise money to replace the squad's 13-year-old ambulance, pictured.

The first donation was $1 from Rev. W. W. Thrower, and a car wash was planned at the "Shell Station in Tri-City" on Saturday.
