Why do we lately hear so many folks blaming society’s ills on late stage capitalism?

What is democratic socialism anyways and how is it different from capitalism or just being a liberal?

Why do some folks say socialism is so good while others say it’s so bad?

If you’re a new DSA member or even someone just curious as to what DSA is all about and you find yourself asking these questions, this event is for you! In this first session of our Fall 2026 New Member Cohort we’re focusing on what capitalism and socialism are. We’ll start by defining and deconstructing capitalism before exploring the socialist alternative and why it answers the flaws built into capitalism.

This cohort will meet for 2 consecutive weeks on Wednesday evenings at the Wheaton Library and this first session is opened to the general public, meaning you don’t have to be a DSA member to join, but we do ask that you register. Meanwhile, the second session will be exclusively for dues paying DSA members.

“But what if I’m not a member but attend the first session, like what I hear, and decide to join?” In that case you can absolutely attend the second one!

These will end at 7:45PM at which point anyone in the cohort is welcome to join our members for a bite, drink and hang at a local bar/restaurant TBD. Space is limited and reserving your spot is required. Please use the QR code or link in our bio to do so! 🌹🌹🌹

Join MoCo DSA on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at BabyCat Brewery in Kensington from 4:00PM-6:00PM immediately following our October General Body meeting at at the nearby Kensington Park Library.

New members, prospective members and DSA curious folks are all welcome! Whether you're looking to get burning questions about DSA answered, get plugged into a working group or just hangout, chat and make some friends- we hope to see you. After all, socialism should be social!

đźš— Parking: you can park in the nearby shopping center by Old Town Market and Carmen's Italian Ice or there is street parking nearby; it does tend to get crowded.

It is also about a 20 minute walk from Kensington Park Library where we are holding are October General Body Meeting from 2:00PM-4:00PM. You can also get a ride from one of us from the library, please don't hesitate to ask if you come to the meeting!

🌮🍻Food & Drink: They have the Cattie Shack Food Truck typically opened serving burgers, pizza, wings and more. You can also get food from other businesses in the nearby shopping center. As a functioning brewery they have a full selection of beers as well as c***r, w**e, cocktails and NA beverages.

Over the course of the last 4 weeks, thanks to you we have collected dozens of direct financial contributions and donated materials to distribute to MoCo families being supported by our partners in Montgomery County Immigrant Rights Collective due to the hundreds of warrantless ICE abductions that occurred in the county between August 1st and 14th.

Our fundraiser/diaper drive will officially conclude this Sunday, October 11, with a final in-person event at The Limerick Pub in Wheaton from 1:00PM to 4:00PM. While at the Pub, MoCo DSA will be collecting donated items off of our registry, raffling off addition prizes, sharing a pint, and enjoying the day’s games. Your admission is any donation or diapers, pull-ups, formula or unscented baby wipes.

On Saturday, October 10, the Montgomery County, MD DSA and Prince George’s County Democratic Socialists of America will travel to Alexandria as part of Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America’s campaign to canvass for Yes on All Three, the ballot measures in to enshrine reproductive freedom, marriage equality, and restoration of voting rights to the formerly incarcerated in the Virginia state constitution.

We will be knocking on doors for 1.5-2 hours and then meet for a social afterwards. Training will be provided, just bring a charged phone, water, and good walking shoes!

While ICE has been a constant threat across the DMV the last 18 months, the most recent wave of targeted abductions in early August has caused a dramatic increase in the number of MoCo and PG families needing additional mutual aid. Montgomery County Immigrant Rights Collective and other our mutual aid partners have requested that MoCo DSA assist with an emergency diaper drive & fundraiser to specifically meet the needs of mothers, infants, and toddlers impacted by ICE abductions and deportations.

To that end, from now through Sunday October 11th, MoCo DSA will be raising funds and gathering supplies to meet the anticipated needs for the rest of 2026 and hopefully early 2027. There are 3 ways for you to participate:

1) Make a direct financial donation to MoCo IRC’s Venmo account via the QR code or through the link in bio. Please label your donation “DSA Diaper Drive” so the funds are properly allocated.

2) Make an online purchase from our directory through the QR Code or link in bio. Please make sure to purchase our exact requested items specifically for diaper and pull up sizes.

3) Finally, please join us in person on Sunday October 11th between 1:00 and 4:00 pm at The Limerick Pub (11301 Elkin St. Silver Spring, MD 20902). Additional raffles, prizes, and games will be available for in-person attendance! “Admission” is simply any donation of diapers, pull ups, baby formula, and/or unscented baby wipes. Please cross reference diaper and pull up sizes with our directory.
