This week, the Montgomery County Council took a definitive stand against corporate greed and artificial rent inflation: we unanimously passed my bill, the Anti-Algorithmic Price Fixing Act.

Landlords shouldn't be allowed to use hidden algorithms to artificially jack up prices and squeeze working families. Housing affordability is a crisis, and we are using every tool available to protect Montgomery County renters and keep people in their homes.

A federal court just struck down the Trump administration's deceptive H.R. 1 rules, halting devastating financial penalties aimed at Maryland's food assistance programs. The ruling also firmly secures SNAP eligibility for permanent residents from humanitarian backgrounds.

While this legal victory protects state funds, the manufactured chaos surrounding these policies has already inflicted deep wounds. Since the law's passage, nearly 40,000 Maryland families have been pushed out of the SNAP program. Montgomery County will keep mobilizing every local resource to ensure our neighbors do not go hungry.

A recent court ruling may have saved states from "potentially ruinous financial penalties" related to changes in SNAP rules, but advocates worry that thousands of Maryland families may still lose coverage as they try to navigate the changes.

I'm thankful to share that yesterday, the PHP Committee unanimously voted to recommend passage the Anti-Algorithmic Price Fixing Act (Bill 8-26).

Residents have shown overwhelming support for this legislation, which is a tangible way to improve housing affordability in our county. We have a responsibility to protect them from this unfair practice.

Today, the PHP Committee unanimously voted to recommend passage of my bill, the Anti-Algorithmic Price Fixing Act (Bill 8-26). I am thankful to my colleagues on the committee for supporting its passage, and to Councilmembers Evans and Mink for joining as cosponsors.

Residents have overwhelmingly supported this bill because it directly increases affordability in the rental housing market by banning algorithmic collusion that results in higher rent. We have a responsibility to protect residents against this unfair practice.

I look forward to the full Council vote this fall.

Recently, our team had the privilege of joining a resident at the Nebel Street Men's Emergency Shelter as he rang the bell to celebrate transitioning to permanent supportive housing.

Moments like this show what is possible when we invest in housing. Yet far too many of our neighbors still cannot access a safe, stable, affordable place to call home. Housing is the foundation for health, work, and dignity. It is a right that we must continue to realize for every resident in Montgomery County.
