While there is currently no active burn bans in Calhoun County our office along with local fire departments are encouraging all residents to not burn. While the temptation maybe high with the recent rainfall we’ve had, the crops and grass are very dry. A controlled burn got out of hand quickly today resulting in 2 fire departments assistance in putting out. Stay safe everyone!

Cropland Fire Index Update:

While the fields may be muddy, the crops have been able to dry with the warm temperatures and sunny skies today. Warm, dry, and windy conditions are expected tomorrow, meaning fires could spread easily. Use caution while harvesting this weekend and take a fire extinguisher with you.

UPDATE 10:00pm. Looks like the thunderstorm warning has been cancelled. There are still chances of rain and some wind throughout the night. Have a safe evening everyone!

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the western half of Calhoun County. Storms are moving east. Hazards include 50mph wind guest and some hail. As always have multiple ways to receive warnings. I expect more warnings to be issued as the storm moves through the rest of the county.

🌾 Harvest Season Is Here! 🌾

As I headed into the office this morning, I noticed several pieces of farm machinery out working in the fields. After a wet couple of weeks, I think we can officially call today the first day of harvest!

As our local farmers head into the fields, Calhoun County Emergency Management would like to remind all residents and visitors to help keep our farmers, families, and first responders safe:

Slow down and give farm equipment plenty of room. These large machines can take longer to stop, may need to swing wide when turning, and can make unexpected movements on the roadway.

Be patient and pass only when it is safe and legal to do so. A few extra minutes on the road is well worth everyone's safety.

Be prepared for the possibility of a field or equipment fire. Dry conditions, machinery, and harvesting operations can create a potential for fires to spread quickly. Knowing your location and having access to equipment, water, or other resources can make a difference while our local volunteer fire departments are responding.

Our local farmers work hard to feed our communities, and our volunteer fire departments work hard to protect them. A little extra awareness and preparation from all of us can go a long way toward making harvest season a safe one.

From all of us at Calhoun County Emergency Management, have a safe, successful, and happy fall harvest! 🍂🌽

Slow down. Give them room. Stay safe.

You know the drill folks… MORE RAIN..

A multi-day rainfall event is expected to impact Iowa beginning Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday and Thursday.

Widespread rainfall totals of 1–2 inches are looking increasingly likely, with portions of Iowa potentially receiving 2–4 inches or more. Western and central Iowa currently have some of the strongest signals for the heaviest rainfall, but significant rain is possible across much of the state.

The biggest concern with this system is not severe weather — it’s flooding. Multiple rounds of showers and embedded thunderstorms could move across the same areas, producing locally heavy rainfall. Flash flooding, urban flooding and additional rises on rivers and streams will all need to be monitored, especially where the heaviest bands repeatedly develop.

Rain should begin spreading into western Iowa Tuesday before becoming more widespread Tuesday night and Wednesday. Wednesday currently looks like one of the wettest periods of the week for much of Iowa, with additional rainfall potentially continuing into Thursday.

There is still uncertainty regarding exactly where the corridor of heaviest rain will set up, and that could shift as we get closer. This is a forecast we’ll be watching closely over the next couple of days.
