Rocky Ford, Colorado, a town of fewer than 4,000 people that is known for its melons, has another source of local pride: wrestling.
In the short film “The Meloneers,” which will show at the Denver Film Festival, director Brendan Young explores what wrestling means to the rural town in eastern Colorado. He follows the wrestling team at Rocky Ford High School, where wrestling and fatherhood intersect. The school receives only $250 a year from the school district to support the high school wrestling team, yet the program persists, continuing to produce state champions.
Young will be at the 49th Denver Film Festival, which runs Oct. 22 to Nov. 1, showcasing his film. The festival announced its program Oct. 3.
Ahead of the Denver event, Rocky Mountain PBS interviewed Young about his storytelling process, how he built trust with the young wrestlers featured in the film and how wrestling becomes a foundation in these young athletes’ lives, shaping who they are on and off the mat.
