🦇Did you know October 24-31 is Bat Week and Arkansas is home to 16 species of bats!?

🦇In celebration of these important flying mammals (and in spirt of the spooky season), we are sharing a Halloween mask featuring a bat and two jack-o-lanterns (2007.21.32).

🦇Bats play a vital role in the environment acting as pest control and pollinators. Unfortunately, many bats in the state have been affected by habitat disturbances and white-nose syndrome.

In recognition of Black Poetry Day, we are sharing a quilt honoring the life and works of Arkansas author and poet, Maya Angelou (2020.21.1).

This quilt was made by members of the Northwest Arkansas Modern Quilt Guild in 2020 as their QuiltCon community project.

As a child, Maya Angelou lived with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. She is best known as a poet, writer, and civil rights activist; but also worked as a fry cook, nightclub performer, s*x worker, actor, journalist, and professor.

It’s National Department Store Day and we are sharing a photograph of Chelle Miller (right) handing a present to Barbara Sparks (left) outside of Stroud’s, 1991 (2009.66.29).

Stroud's Mercantile Company was founded in 1884 by H.L. Stroud, and H.L's younger brother A.B. Stroud joined the firm in 1887. In 1898, H.L. had a large, two-story storefront built on West Walnut Street. The Stroud Mercantile Co. was the first and last department store in downtown Rogers, operating for 104 years.
