It’s North Bay Zero Waste Week!⚠️

Hey everyone, this week we will talk about ways in which we can improve our ecosystems one piece of waste at a time!

Why should we care about waste, and what effects does it have? Great question! By collectively coming together to reduce our waste, we can create benefits for the environment. We can decrease waste in our ecosystems by reducing, reusing, recycling, repurposing, and composting! 🗑️

North Bay Zero Waste Week was initiated to raise awareness about how waste and our ways of living cause an impact on the environment. We must find ways to live a more zero-waste lifestyle, and groups around the North Bay teach us just that! These groups have public education events and activities where they focus on reducing, reusing, recycling, repurposing, and composting.‼️

It’s an opossum Wednesday!☀️

You know what day it is…. Happy Wildlife Wednesday!

This week, let's talk about the native Virginia Opossum. They are native to North America, specifically along the western coast. They range from southern Canada to just North of Costa Rica. Virginia opossums tend to stay in habitats such as woodlands, wetlands, forests, and urban and suburban areas.🌲

They mostly tend to stay in areas where they have access to human food, which is why they can be found by the Copeland Creek corridor alongside Sonoma State! Although they tend to rummage through garbage cans, that's not their only food source. Virginia opossums are seen as a “clean-up crew” since they eat other dead animals and insects.

They are fairly small, weighing between 4 and 15 pounds and being around 2.5 feet long! To survive, they adapt certain behaviors. Opossums actually play dead to prevent predators from eating them. But they don’t always rely on this tactic! Their main tactics are to either stand their ground and fight, or flee the scene.🥊

The Virginia opossums have even been captured by some of the wildlife cameras around Copeland Creek (as seen in the image). Thanks to the Copeland Creek Informational Hub, we are able to see images like these and so much more!

It’s Info Thursday!!!😊

Have you ever heard about CEI's Creeks in Common initiative? If not, learn more here!

Creeks in Common collaborates on watershed research and planning -- connecting teaching, research, student learning, community, and engagement through projects on our campus and preserves!🌳

The most recent CiC workshop was held on May 14, 2026, at Sonoma State University. At these workshops, CiC gathers the following working groups together: Academic Action, which includes CEI partners and how they can support and enhance community work. Water Resources, which conducts research and finds ways to improve water health. Regenerative Landscaping, which focuses on education on how to restore our lands.

The other two working groups are: Human-Nature Connections, which undertakes projects that build linkages between humans, animals, and plant life. The last working group mentioned is Habitat Awareness, which focuses on facilitating community engagement by connecting them to the SSU Native Plant Garden/Campus Nature Corridor.🤝

Our working groups are how we turn education into action – creating projects that students can engage with and continuing to build connections between campus and community over time!

Stay tuned with CEI and learn more at cei.sonoma.edu/CreeksInCommon.

What does the fox say?

Happy Wildlife Wednesday, everyone! This week, we’re talking about the wonderfully sly Gray Fox found along the Copeland Creek Corridor on the Sonoma State campus!🦊

The gray fox is native to California and can be found in natural habitats and countryside areas throughout North and Central America. Unfortunately, their native lands have shrunk over time due to human impacts, such as deforestation.

This species is small/medium sized (can be up to 47 inches in length) and is very sly. They also tend to climb trees (as seen in the image) to hide from predators and hunt prey. Given their size and behavior, they are able to be very secretive and avoid being seen during the day. They typically come out during dusk, dawn, and nighttime!🐾

Special thanks to Richie Cross for capturing this awesome photo on August 29th at our Copeland Creek Trail event!🤗
