[3:25 AM CDT Monday 11/2/2026]

Today into Tuesday will be cloudy, breezy, and mild, with a few rain drops at times ahead of an approaching slow moving weather system. The first widespread soaking rainfall in a few weeks is expected later Tuesday into early Wednesday ahead of the system’s cold front.

While a modest cool down is expected for the 2nd half of the workweek, temperatures will still be above average for early November until a more pronounced cool-down over the upcoming weekend.

This past October was an unseasonably warm month across the region, finishing as a top ten warmest October for both Chicago and Rockford. The month was also drier than normal across most of the area, with the bulk of the month's precipitation occurring across 2-3 days.

Here are a few additional statistics that put the persistent warmth observed over the course of the month in context:

-The coldest high temperature observed in Chicago during the month was 57 degrees. This is now Chicago's warmest minimum October high temperature on record. In other words, this was the first time on record that Chicago did not observe a high temperature lower than 57 degrees in the month of October.
-Rockford's coldest high temperature during the month was 56 degrees. This was Rockford's 2nd warmest minimum October high temperature -- only ranked below the lowest high temperature of 58 degrees observed in October of 1956.
-A high temperature of 60 degrees or greater was observed on 28 out of the 31 days of the month in both Chicago and Rockford. For Chicago, this ties the most 60+ degree days on record in the month of October (previously observed in 1963 and 1971). Rockford's record for 60+ degree days in October is 29 days, which occurred in four separate years (1924, 1938, 1963, and 1971).

[6:52 AM CDT Saturday 10/31/2026]

We've updated our Halloween climate data page for Chicago and Rockford to give some context on today's weather (expected high in the 60s with occasional light rain/sprinkles).

Just 3 years ago, the 0.9" snowfall at Chicago-O'Hare was only the 3rd instance of measurable snow on Halloween on record in Chicago. In addition, the high that day was only 38° at both Chicago-O'Hare (5th coldest Halloween on record for Chicago) and Rockford (tied for 4th coldest Halloween on record for Rockford).

Even more memorable (especially if you like snow and cold, not so much if you don't!) was Halloween 2019. It was the snowiest Halloween on record for both Chicago (3.4") and Rockford (3.1"), and the high of 33° at both sites made it the 2nd coldest Halloween for Rockford and the 3rd coldest for Chicago.

[3:25 AM CDT Saturday 10/31/2026]

It will be a cloudy and mild Halloween. During peak trick or treating hours, expect intermittent light rain or sprinkles at most, as shower coverage is expected to diminish vs. this morning in parts of the area. Daylight Saving Time will end tonight (2 AM Sunday), so don’t forget to set those clocks back!

The first week of November will start on a mild and breezy note, followed by a period of wet weather centered on the midweek period.

[3:48 AM CDT Friday 10/30/2026]

As we close out October and start November, the weather pattern will be more unsettled vs. the exceptionally quiet/dry conditions for most of October. Seasonably mild temperatures will continue, though not as warm as recently.

Rain showers tonight into Saturday morning will diminish in coverage by peak Halloween trick or treating hours, though expect some on and off sprinkles or drizzle in spots into the evening.
