There is a consent form at: roscommoncounty.net/218/Spongy-Moth-Program that you can complete if you wish to have your property surveyed for the 2027 spring spray.

Spongy Moth caterpillars feed on the leaves of many trees, especially oaks, and their populations can grow so quickly that they can strip all the leaves off of entire stands of trees, damaging them severely. Find important information on spray programs, precautions, and preventative measures.

Please see the attached letter regarding changes to the Spongy Moth Survey.

FYI if you are seeing these in your trees they are Eastern Tent Caterpillars, they are in no way related to the invasive Spongy Moth. Tent Caterpillars primarily target fruit trees (especially Cherry) and while unsightly and occasionally, mildly destructive to the infested tree, they are generally considered harmless.
If they are causing an issue you can simply remove the branches with clean sharp pruners and dispose of them by soaking them in a bucket of soapy water. Burning and or pesticides are discouraged.

FUN FACT: 1 chickadee will eat 6,000-9,000 caterpillars

There will be no Spongy Moth suppression spray in 2026. Please see below letter
