Roscommon Community Garden The Crawford-Roscommon Conservation District has established a community garden in Roscommon where people can learn about gardening and landscaping.

A pollinator habitat garden, asparagus patch, and raised beds will teach people about renewable resources. In addition, trees and shrubs will be planted to teach people about species that grow in Northern Michigan. We are always seeking volunteers, so if you are interested, please contact Maureen Ruddy at 989 745-5999.

Thanks to a generous grant from Arauco, work has begun on the ADA compliant area of the garden. This is our final expansion project. The Garden board would like to thank Tom O’Brien for his expertise and assistance with the layout and Gregg Fluegel and his team from Twin Oaks Landscaping for the site work. When completed, the area will contain up to 3 wheelchair accessible garden beds.

I delivered 26 pounds of potatoes to St. Vincent de Paul’s today! All of that yield from just one 4x8 community bed! Next year we hope to add sweet potatoes.

 I will be dropping off these gems from our latest harvest today. I’m heading to the senior center. Lots of jalapeños, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, and even some basil. Some very generous member dropped off 2.21 pounds of jalapeños! Thank you for contributing to our donation program!

Community beds are still producing beets, purple-green beans, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers! We have a full 4 x 8 bed of potatoes waiting to mature as well! To our dear members: thank you for donating from your surplus, you are helping us meet our goal of giving more than last year. And anytime you are out of town or unable to harvest, give us a call or text, and we will be happy to harvest for you and donate!

We had a nice strawberry yield this year but the berries were a little small, so after some googling and studying, I decided to try thinning the bed and mulching it for the fall/winter. There is always something to learn here at the Garden, so if you’re new to gardening and would like to give it a try, we’d love to have you join us. We have beds for rent next season at a variety of sizes and prices - just send us a message if you’re interested.
