At last night's regular Gerrish Township board meeting, Clerk Michelle Squires formally swore in our newest Officer Richard Cahoon.
Officer Cahoon was born and raised in Michigan's Thumb area and served in the Michigan Army National Guard. After completing his military service he attended Kirtland Community College's Regional Police Academy and graduated in December of 2024.
Officer Cahoon began his law enforcement career on December 6, 2024 with the Crawford County Sheriff's Office. Richard joined the Gerrish Township Police Department on September 8, 2026.
Outside of work he enjoys spending time outdoors, fishing, hunting, hiking and archery. He looks forward to serving the Gerrish Township community and getting to know its residents and business owners.
We welcome Officer Richard Cahoon to our Gerrish Township Police Department and are very happy he joined our team!

National Crime Prevention Month

October is National Crime Prevention Month and we ask everyone to play a role in keeping our homes, schools and communities safe.
Check out our Home Security Checklist and Home Security Booklet for tips and suggestions to keep your homes and personal items safe. Go to www.gerrishpolice.org/safety-tips/home-security-tips/ and you can also visit our Identity Theft page at www.gerrishpolice.org/identity-theft/ for facts and identity theft protection tips.
If you leave your residence for the winter or go out of town on vacation, take advantage of our Unoccupied Property Checks. Go to our website at www.gerrishpolice.org/house-check/ and complete the request form online. Officers will check your property while you are away. This form can also be submitted through our Mobile Application under the "House Check Request" icon on the home screen.
REMEMBER...Unless you have specific dates on file, house check forms need to be completed each time you go away. They do not stay on file from year to year and are purged from our system in May of each year once most people have returned for the summer season. This ensures that we have the most accurate contact information for every request.

Fall Road Clean Up

Last Thursday afternoon (September 17,2026) 13 volunteers, including Gerrish Police Officers, cleaned up both sides of County Road 100 from the top of Pioneer Hill to Hillsdale Drive collecting 10 bags of trash and a large garbage can.
We pick up trash in May and September as part of Roscommon County's Adopt-A-Road Program to help keep our community clean.
Volunteers enjoyed pizza and pop/water provided by ACT NOW after the clean-up was done.
Thank you to all who took the time to assist with this project!
If you are interested in volunteering for our road clean up efforts, please contact Julie at 989-821-5207 Ext. 291 to add your name to the volunteer list. Our next date will be scheduled in May 2027.
