ROSEBURG, Ore. - A coordinated search effort involving the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Douglas County Search and Rescue volunteers resulted in the successful location of a missing 73-year-old Roseburg man Friday evening.

On Friday, October 9, 2026, at approximately 2:10 p.m., deputies responded to a residence in the 2800-block of SE Booth Avenue after receiving a report of a missing man. The man's wife reported that her husband, who suffers from dementia and has limited mobility, had last been seen on the evening of Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

Deputies conducted an initial search of the property but were unable to locate the man. Due to concerns for his safety, particularly given his medical condition and mobility limitations, Douglas County Search and Rescue was activated to assist in locating him.

As search efforts expanded, a Douglas Alerts notification was issued to residents within a one-mile radius of the residence, providing a description of the missing man and alerting the community to the search.

At approximately 6:02 p.m., a Search and Rescue ground search team located a packed bag on a neighboring property. The man's wife confirmed the bag belonged to her husband. Search personnel relayed the location to a Sheriff's Office drone operator, who focused aerial search efforts on the surrounding terrain.

Just eight minutes later, at approximately 6:10 p.m., the drone operator located the missing man on a hillside. Search and Rescue personnel responded to the location and assisted him to safety. Deputies determined the man had fallen down a steep, dry grassy slope with an estimated grade of 35 to 45 degrees and had spent a night outdoors before being located.

The man was evaluated by ambulance personnel at the scene but declined further medical assistance. He was subsequently escorted back to his residence where he was reunited with his wife and daughter.

This successful mission highlights the importance of resource coordination, including technology.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office extends its appreciation to the Search and Rescue Volunteers, emergency medical personnel, and everyone who assisted with the search.

LOOKINGGLASS, Ore. - One man is dead and another in custody in an apparent homicide that took place in Lookingglass Sunday.

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, shortly after 3:45 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a call from 57-year-old Matthew William Bronsert of Lookingglass requesting assistance at a residence in the 7000-block of Lookingglass Road. Bronsert lived on the property in an outbuilding.

When deputies arrived, they were able to convince Bronsert to come outside to talk with them. Bronsert eventually came out of the residence at 5:53 p.m. At that time, he attempted to assault a deputy and was taken into custody. Deputies noted that Bronsert had blood on his clothing, which prompted them to conduct a welfare check on another male at the property.

When deputies entered the residence, they located a deceased adult male inside of the main residence with multiple gunshot wounds. The nature of the death appeared to be of foul play, and the victim's name is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Bronsert was later questioned and admitted to shooting the victim. He was lodged in the Douglas County Jail on charges of Murder in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team was activated and is currently leading the investigation, which remains active. There is no on-going threat to the public.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team consists of investigators from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Roseburg Police Department and Oregon State Police working in consultation with the Douglas County District Attorney's Office.

In addition to the Major Crimes Team, assisting agencies included Lookingglass Rural Fire District, Umpqua Valley Ambulance, Sutherlin and Winston Police Departments.

The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details are expected to be released at this time. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact investigators at 541-440-4458 referencing Case #26-3196.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office announces the retirement of K9 Eros, a German Shepard trained in patrol apprehension.

K9 Eros, a 8 ½ -year-old German Shepherd, has been a valued member of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office since November 2021. Eros was purchased by an anonymous community donor and gifted to the Sheriff's Office. The decision for retirement comes following medical advice of his veterinary care team.

Eros will continue to live with his handler where he will be a family dog for the remainder of his life.

Since joining the Sheriff's Office, Eros has been deployed more than 100 times in support of law enforcement operations. Those deployments have resulted in:

22 community demonstrations
11 felony arrests
9 misdemeanor arrests
21 felony case assists
19 misdemeanor case assists
39 total captures

During his tenure, Eros had two handlers; Retired Deputy Oscar Rosas and his current handler, Deputy William Maynes.

"Eros has been the best partner. He has been my best friend and my backup. He's loved his work and serving our great community", Deputy Maynes stated. "It has been my honor to have been his handler and now it's my continued honor to give him a home as a normal dog enjoying his retirement."

"Eros was and still is the best companion a K9 handler can have. He has no fear and unconditional bravery in any situation." Retired Deputy Rosas said. "Thank you for your service, buddy."

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office K9 program has been highly active since 2013. The program would not be possible without the continued support of community members, donors, and organizations such as the Friends of Umpqua Valley Police K9 Programs, and Bailey's Veterinary Clinic who provides medical care for the K9s at no expense.
