We are heart broken to learn of Dr. Beckham’s passing. He was a great friend to the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe, playing a significant role in navigating the historical research and documentation required to ensure our federal re-recognition in 1982. We will forever be grateful for his dedication and friendship.

On Indigenous Peoples Day, we pause to reflect on those who came before us. Those who continue to celebrate and share their traditions and culture. Those who choose to search for the pieces of history that were lost. And how all of us make Indian Country’s beautiful woven cloth stronger.

is a painful but important part of history that deserves more than a color. It represents having everything taken away. During the U.S. and Canadian boarding school eras of the 19th and 20th centuries, Native American and First Nations children were removed from their families and sent to residential schools where they had their identities, language, and culture stripped away, then subjected to terrible conditions. Many families never knew what happened to their children. On September 30, we wear orange to remember what others lost.

Our primary level language book Takelma Colors has been named to the IBBY International Board on Books for Young People UNESCO Collection of Remarkable Books for Young Readers in Indigenous and Endangered Languages. This is a tremendous honor and another reassurance that Native and Indigenous languages are beautiful and can remain alive.

Please join us in congratulating Chief Todd Spingath on his appointment as the new Chief of Police for the Cow Creek Tribal Police Department.

Chief Spingath brings over 30 years of law enforcement experience to this role, as well as a Medal of Honor award for his response to the Umpqua Community College tragedy on October 1, 2015.

"It is an honor to serve the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribal families, all the people who work for the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe, and the people of Douglas County," said Chief Spingath. "I look forward to building even more connections and working with our community to keep it safe, secure, and strong."

The Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe is investing $500,000 over the next 10 years with Roseburg Schools to upgrade Roseburg High School's sports complex — plus, RHS will now offer Takelma language classes for graduation credit, open to ALL students.
