In Memoriam | Dr. David Persse

Fort Bend County EMS joins the greater EMS and public safety community in mourning the passing of Dr. David Persse, a pioneer in EMS medical direction whose influence on prehospital medicine extends far beyond the City of Houston.

For decades, Dr. Persse helped shape the practice of EMS medical direction, developing clinicians, physicians, and leaders who would carry those lessons forward throughout our region and beyond. Fort Bend County EMS is fortunate to have part of that legacy represented within our own leadership. Medical Director Dr. Joseph Gill and Associate Medical Director Dr. Lars Thestrup both had the opportunity to practice under Dr. Persse’s guidance during their time with the Houston Fire Department.

Our department was also honored to welcome Dr. Persse as a keynote speaker at the 2025 Fort Bend County EMS Symposium. Having someone whose career had such a profound impact on EMS share his experience, knowledge, and perspective with our providers was a privilege we will not forget.

Dr. Persse’s legacy can be seen not only in the systems and programs he helped build, but in the people he mentored and the generations of EMS professionals influenced by those he taught.

On behalf of Fort Bend County EMS, we extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Persse’s family, friends, colleagues, and the Houston Fire Department family.

His impact on EMS will continue long after his passing. May he rest in peace.

Yesterday, Medic 617 (Paramedic McKenzie & BC Liversidge) received an unexpected visitor—and one of the best outcomes imaginable.

A patient who suffered a witnessed cardiac arrest recently came to meet the crews who responded to her emergency and helped give her a second chance. Willowfork Fire Department/Fort Bend County ESD 2 arrived first and delivered two AED shocks before working alongside Medic 617 & Battalion 603 (BC Lane).

After receiving advanced cardiac care and spending time in the hospital, she was discharged home and is continuing her recovery.

Moments like this remind us why early recognition, immediate CPR and AED use, coordinated EMS and fire response, and definitive hospital care matter so much. We are proud of everyone who played a role in this patient’s remarkable outcome.

Thank you for coming back to see us. It meant more than you know.

September 15 carries a profound weight for Fort Bend County EMS.

Seven years ago today, our organization lost Deputy Chief of Training Kathleen “Kat” Hartley to su***de. The grief of that loss moved through our EMS family like a wave, and its effects are still felt today. We remember Chief Hartley for her leadership, her service, her contributions to Fort Bend County EMS, and the lives she touched throughout her career.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, but caring for one another cannot be limited to a single month. First responders routinely step into the most difficult moments of other people’s lives, and that weight can quietly accumulate. Strength does not mean carrying it alone.

Talk. Listen without judgment. Notice when someone becomes distant, quiet, or simply does not seem like themselves. Ask the difficult question, remain present, and help them connect with support. You do not need to have the perfect words. Sometimes the most important thing you can offer is the assurance that someone does not have to face the darkness alone.

If you are struggling, please reach out to someone you trust. Call or text the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline for free, confidential support available 24 hours a day.

It is safe to say you are not OK. You matter. You are not alone. This life truly is better with you in it.

Twenty-five years ago, September 11, 2001, changed our nation forever.

Today, Fort Bend County EMS remembers the lives taken, the families whose loved ones never came home, and the first responders who faced extraordinary danger to help others. We also honor those who have since lost their lives to illnesses related to the response and recovery efforts, and those who continue to carry the physical and emotional wounds.

As we reflect on their courage and sacrifice, we renew our commitment to serving our neighbors with compassion, standing beside our fellow responders, and being there when our community needs us most.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Welcome home!

Paramedics McKenzie & DeLeon recently returned from a Texas Emergency Medical Task Force deployment supporting the response to the Ross Fire in Palo Pinto and Jack counties.

During the deployment, our paramedics provided medical force protection for crews working in and around the fire area. They also supported the affected communities by augmenting local 911 EMS resources while those systems managed the demands of the incident.

We are proud of Paramedic McKenzie & DeLeon’s willingness to step beyond our county and serve Texans during times of need. Thank you for representing Fort Bend County EMS with professionalism, compassion, and dedication.

This morning, MPV6-03, crewed by FTO Wang & Paramedics LaCourse, Liversidge and Richmond provided medical support to the OnsOranje Netherlands Mile March prior to their FIFA World Cup game vs. Sweden. The AMBUS was configured as a cooling station with ice, water & additional IV fluids in preparation for significant heat emergencies due to the extreme heat & humidity this weekend. Thankfully the majority of the crowd stayed healthy & hydrated and enjoyed the march. 🚑🇳🇱⚽️🇸🇪 Svensk fotboll
