Thank you to everyone in the community who helped us track West Nile virus this year by reporting dead birds! Because WNV circulates between mosquitoes and birds, testing dead birds helps us identify where the virus is active and guide our mosquito control efforts.

👉 This year, we’ve received 97 dead bird submissions, with 9 positive WNV test results.

There are only a few more days left to report dead birds to the hotline this season. Even as the weather cools and the season winds down, every report matters!

🐀 It’s Rodent Awareness Week! You know us for mosquitoes, but our public health mission includes other vectors, too.

Placer Mosquito is not a pest control company, and we don’t provide rodent trapping or baiting services. Instead, we offer advice and guidance on rodents because they, along with the fleas they carry, can spread diseases and pose a public health threat.

As the weather cools, rodents may seek food and shelter indoors. Help keep them from making themselves at home in your home!

👉 Store food and pet food in rodent-proof containers.
👉 Keep garbage lids tightly closed.
👉 Pick up fallen fruit and remove potential hiding places.
👉 Seal gaps and openings around your home.

Have questions? We’re here to help you understand rodent-related public health concerns and prevention. Learn more at placermosquito.org/rodents 🏡

Feeling grateful for our Truckee community! Yesterday, we joined the Truckee River Watershed Council and other community organizations for Truckee River Day, where we celebrated the watershed and the natural spaces we call home! 🌲💧

After a day of restoration projects, volunteers and community members gathered at Truckee River Regional Park, where we brought a little mosquito buzz with insect education and hands-on activities 🦟🔎 We loved connecting with Truckee residents and sharing how protecting public health helps our communities enjoy the outdoors.

👉 Live in the Truckee area? Angella, our Tahoe Basin substation manager, is your go-to person for mosquito and vector questions!

The votes have been counted, and the Placer Mosquito team member most likely to survive a horror movie is…
ANGELLA!!! 👻🏆

Looks like facing those yellowjackets (and bears!) up at our Truckee substation has earned you some brownie points with those of us in Roseville. Congrats, Angella!

Stay tuned for more spooky polls coming soon! 🎃

Be sure to watch the video to hear from our runners-up, Mel & Tom! 🎬

You know what’s really spooky this season? 👻

👉 Standing water hiding around your yard… where mosquitoes could be breeding.

So we have a challenge for you: can YOU spot the hidden mosquito sources? 🔎

Placer County has seen a notable increase in invasive Aedes aegypti this season, and you can help! Check your plant saucers, buckets, toys, and other items that can hold water. DUMP, DRAIN, and SCRUB regularly.

Why scrub? Their eggs stick to container walls and can survive even after the water dries out. Those eggs can hatch when water returns.

Don’t let the next generation come back to haunt your yard! 🦟

POV: It’s fall, the weather is cooler, but you’re still getting mosquito bites… sometimes even inside your home. What’s up with that? 🦟

You may be dealing with invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which we’re finding throughout west Placer County. Here’s what you need to know:

👉 They are not known to transmit West Nile virus in California.
👉 They are aggressive daytime biters and can bite indoors.
👉 They are small and black with white markings.
👉 They can breed in as little as a teaspoon of standing water.
👉They can develop from egg to adult in about 7–10 days.

So, what can you do?

✅ Check your yard weekly for standing water. Dump, drain, and scrub containers!
✅ Use an EPA-registered insect repellent.
✅ Wear long sleeves and long pants.
✅ Repair window and door screens, and keep doors closed.

Cooler weather doesn’t mean it’s time to let your guard down!
