Our officers had a blast yesterday participating in Halloween events at St Mary Catholic Church in Downtown Royal Oak and the South Oakland Family YMCA. Dressed as Minions, our officers handed out candy, shared plenty of laughs, and enjoyed spending time with the kids and families who make our community so special.

These events are a great example of what community policing is all about — building relationships, making positive connections, and getting to know our residents outside of our everyday calls for service.

Yesterday was a busy day for our officers, with participation in three community policing events throughout the day. We’re grateful for every opportunity to get out into the community, share some smiles, and strengthen the connections that make Royal Oak such a great place to live.

Thanks to St. Mary’s and the South Oakland YMCA for welcoming us. We had a “despicable” amount of fun! 😁

Great people, great conversations, and a great night in Royal Oak! Our police officers and cadets enjoyed last night’s Fall Family Festival at Royal Oak High School. Thanks to everyone who came out and spent part of their evening with us. Thank you Royal Oak Schools for inviting us to be part of this amazing evening and congratulations to the Ravens on their big 27-7 win over Clawson!!

Last night, we were excited to welcome the 2026 Citizens Police Academy class! Now in its 11th year, the Royal Oak Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy gives residents a firsthand look at the people, practices, and operations that help keep our community safe.

Participants began the program with a welcome and introduction to the department from Chief Moore, followed by a special tour of our state-of-the-art police station. Over the coming weeks, they’ll gain insight into a variety of police operations, including Patrol, 911 Communications, Defensive Tactics, K-9, and Criminal Investigations.

The experience goes beyond the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a ride-along with a patrol officer, experience our MILO simulator, learn about verbal de-escalation, and explore a variety of other hands-on activities and real-world experiences that provide a deeper understanding of the challenges, responsibilities, and day-to-day operations of modern policing.

Most importantly, the Citizens Police Academy provides an opportunity to build relationships, increase understanding, and strengthen the connection between our department and the community we proudly serve.

Last night’s introductions showcased the backgrounds and perspectives of the residents who make Royal Oak such a great place to live. We’re looking forward to the weeks ahead and to another outstanding Citizens Police Academy experience!

The nationwide DEA Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 24th, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. No liquids or needles will be accepted. As a reminder, the Royal Oak Police Department lobby is home to a dedicated prescription drug take back bin year around and available for disposal of all appropriate medication 24 hours per day. One of the best parts about having a patrol car for your "work space" is driving around town and seeing the houses decorated for Halloween. Here's a cool way to see them for yourselves. Enjoy!

Our friends at the Royal Oak Halloween Home Tour are back, and they've added some fun new features this year!

The tour map highlights homes throughout Royal Oak that have gone all out for Halloween.

What's new this year?

🎃 An easier-to-use map! Homes are now organized by area of the city. Suggested routes for each area will be shared Thursday, Oct. 15.

🎃 Yard signs! Keep an eye out for Halloween Home Tour signs at some of the featured homes. Each sign includes a QR code linking to the map.

🎃 You've been spotted! Some homeowners may find a postcard letting them know their Halloween decorations earned them a spot on the tour. Homeowners can request to have their home removed.

We appreciate the folks behind the Royal Oak Halloween Home Tour for putting this all together and all the residents who make our hometown downright spectacular.

The Royal Oak Police Department would like to thank everyone who came out to celebrate Faith & Blue Weekend with us at The National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica.

It was wonderful to see families, neighbors, and community members come together for a morning of conversation and fellowship. Events like these are a great reminder that building a safer, stronger community starts with the relationships we build beyond the badge.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this event a success and for the continued partnership between our department, our faith community, and the people we proudly serve.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support yesterday’s ROPD vs. ROFD charity hockey game at John Lindell Ice Arena - Royal Oak. We had a wonderful time raising money for Gilda's Club Metro Detroit. ROPD was victorious 4-1, extending their win streak over ROFD to nine!
