On Sunday, October 18, members of the Royston Fire Department joined firefighters from Bold Spring, Double Churches, and Sandy Cross Fire Departments for a day of hands-on training focused on structural firefighting operations.
The training concentrated on two important fireground skills: Vertical Ventilation and Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search (VEIS).
Vertical ventilation requires firefighters to operate from the roof of a structure, creating openings that allow accumulated heat, smoke, and fire gases to escape. When properly executed and coordinated with interior crews, this tactic can significantly improve conditions for firefighters working inside the building.
VEIS is a targeted search technique designed to provide firefighters with rapid access to areas where occupants may be trapped. This tactic emphasizes quick decision-making, room isolation, and systematic search procedures under challenging conditions.
Throughout the training, artificial smoke was utilized to create realistic, low-visibility conditions, allowing firefighters to practice these skills in a controlled environment.
Effective fireground operations depend on more than individual skills. They require communication, coordination, and the ability of multiple departments to function as one team.
For departments throughout our area, mutual aid is an important part of emergency response. Training alongside our neighboring agencies helps establish consistency in operations, build confidence among personnel, and strengthen the working relationships that are essential when responding to actual emergencies.
The Royston Fire Department appreciates the opportunity to train alongside our neighboring departments and recognizes the commitment of each firefighter who dedicated their Sunday to improving their skills.
