For Fire Prevention Week, we are featuring one firehouse or significant RFD event each day.

Today we feature Engine Co. 3 and Rescue Co. 5.

Engine 3 was incorporated in 1890 as Westend Engine & Hose Company 3. Before moving into the firehouse they are in today, they were located in a small wooden frame firehouse that still stands today at 315 Union Ave.

Rescue Co. 5 is Rutherford's youngest fire company, being incorporated in 1948. They also operate Marine 5, a fire rescue boat that is housed in a garage at the boathouse.

Today, we remember two firefighters from Rescue Company 5 who died in the line of duty.

🙏 Captain Edwin L. Ward, who made the supreme sacrifice on July 14, 1965.

🙏 Firefighter Thomas E. Dunn, who made the supreme sacrifice on January 4, 1994.

We chose to post about these two heroes today because tonight, October 8, 2026, we will hold our annual memorial service at Fireman’s Park, located at the corner of Park Avenue and W. Pierrepont Avenue, directly across Mortimer Avenue from Engine Co. 2’s firehouse.

Tonights memorial service begins at 7:00 PM.

Today we feature the oldest Engine Company in town, Rutherford Engine Co. 2.
Engine Co 2 was established in 1886 and is housed at the Mortimer Ave. Fire House.
Before moving to Mortimer Ave. Engine 2 was located on Park Ave. where Cafe Matisse is today.
Part of Engine Co. 2 is the Special Service Unit; the SSU responded as a supplemental apparatus in support of firefighting operations. 🎩🎩

For Fire Prevention Week, we will feature one firehouse or significant RFD event each day.
Today we feature the oldest fire company in town, Rutherford Truck Co. 1. The Truck Company was incorporated in 1875, the same year the Rutherford Fire Department was incorporated.
Rutherford Engine Co. 4 shares its quarters with Truck Co. 1.
Engine 4 was incorporated in 1896.
Today, both companies are located at Fire Headquarters at 40 Ames Ave; this is the third firehouse that was located on Ames Ave.

Empty bays ... busy days. The Rutherford Fire Department operated at two runs so far today. Engine 4, Truck 1, Rescue 5 and 56-3 responded at 111 Chestnut Street for a stalled occupied elevator. This was Incident #479 for the RFD in 2026!

Rutherford Truck Co. 1 auxiliary member David Bogosian has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and we are proud of his commitment to our country, stay safe Dave and Semper Fi.
