Abuse isn't always visible, and it isn't always physical. Emotional abuse, financial control, isolation, monitoring, threats, and pressure can all be serious warning signs.

NewStory Center's relationship check-in asks whether a partner, family member, caregiver, or friend does things like:

▪️Constantly checks up on where you are or what you're doing
▪️Tries to keep you from seeing your own friends or family
▪️Controls the household finances or stops you from having money for yourself
▪️Makes you feel afraid to disagree or say no
▪️Often puts you down or makes you feel worthless

Friends and family may notice changes, too. Someone might stop showing up to activities they used to enjoy, seem afraid to disagree with a partner, or lose access to their own money.

If you're concerned that someone is monitoring your phone or computer, it may help to reach out from a safe device. If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts.

Call NewStory Center at (802) 775-6788 to explore your options.

If you are in need of assistance, the 24/7 crisis line will be available by calling (802) 775-3232.

For a survivor, asking for help can require an incredible amount of trust. At NewStory Center, we work to be a safe place to go, where survivors can share their stories, explore their options, and take the next step at their own pace.

You don't have to be sure what to call your experience before reaching out, and you don't need a plan already in place.

Someone might call our 24-hour crisis line at (802) 775-3232 to ask how to support a loved one, learn more about warning signs, or begin a safety plan. Every one of those calls is welcome. This October, help us build a community where survivors are met with trust, safety, and care.
