Frontline Workers….As Mayor, and on behalf of Grainger County Citizens I would like to Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your incredible bravery, selflessness, and sleepless nights following the devastating floods this week. When the waters rose and crisis hit our home, you ran toward the danger without a second thought. Because of your dedication and seamless teamwork, approximately 30 of our neighbors, friends, and family members were safely rescued from treacherous conditions. Seeing our community unite showed the true, unbreakable heart of Grainger County.
We are deeply grateful to the Grainger County Sheriff’s Department and our City Police Departments for being on the front lines, navigating hazardous areas, and physically pulling residents to safety. The specialized skills and swift-water deployments of our Volunteer Fire Departments and Rescue Squad kept tragedy at bay, while Grainger County EMA and EMS provided immediate support and medical care as needed. We owe a massive debt to the Highway Department, who worked in terrible conditions to clear debris and open roads so rescue vehicles could pass. Behind the scenes, the 911 Operations Staff served as our ultimate lifeline, acting as the calm, steady voices guiding scared residents through the chaos and precisely routing help exactly where it was needed most.
We also extend our thanks to our Mutual Aid Partners from surrounding counties who rushed to our borders the moment we called, treating our citizens as their very own. Alongside them, our local community volunteers proved what it truly means to be a neighbor. Thank you to Grainger County Baptist Association for opening their doors to the residents needing shelter and comfort for those displaced. To ensure we have the support needed to recover.
Yesterday, in conjunction with our City Mayors, I officially submitted a declaration to our State Legislators declaring Grainger County a State of Emergency. This crucial step will hopefully bring in the resources required to help us recover. We are devastated by the property damage, but we are lifted by your immense courage. You are the absolute best of us, and we are forever in your debt.
Mayor Mike Byrd
