The CA state May Budget Revision proposes a $2,000 asset limit that would require adults over 65 and those with disabilities to impoverish themselves to qualify for Medi-Cal health care services.

Asset limits include savings, cash, second vehicles, and other financial resources.

The administration estimates this proposal would result in about 62,000 people losing coverage within the first two years.

This Bay Area affordable housing project is finally rising. The real test is what comes next 05/20/2026

Affordable housing in California often faces a massive “financing gap,” relying on layers of public funding that can delay or even stop projects. But new approaches—like faster prefab construction and expanded tax credits—are helping developers close the gap and build more housing, sooner.

This Bay Area affordable housing project is finally rising. The real test is what comes next Rather than relying on city and county subsidies, the project was funded on a streamlined mix of tax credit equity, debt and institutional partnership.

Opinion | It took effort to get me off the streets. With funding cuts looming, will I have to go back? 05/18/2026

Guest commentator Shawn Pleasants notes that only after he had a roof over his head could he begin to heal. It takes up to two years for a formerly homeless person in supportive housing to stabilize. That’s because the trauma of living on the street – both physical and mental – requires that much time to heal. The more Californias we allow to fall into homelessness, the greater the need for healing and recovery amongst our neighbors. Cutting housing funding costs so much more than prevention.

Opinion | It took effort to get me off the streets. With funding cuts looming, will I have to go back? Being homelessness meant taking on damage night after night. Having a roof over my head means I could begin to heal. Now it’s all at risk.
