We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of our Board Chair and beloved member of the United Way family Joaquin Razo.

For a decade, Joaquin poured his heart into United Way California Capital Region first as a member of our staff helping grow Women United and the Young Leaders Society and later as a dedicated board member and most recently Chair of our Board of Directors. His leadership was not just defined by titles, but by action, vision and a belief in what this community could become.

Joaquin loved Sacramento deeply. He believed in its people, its potential and its future and he showed that belief through everything he did. From championing our 100th Anniversary Campaign to helping shape our annual Gala to helping to expand our critical work in housing and guaranteed income, Joaquin was committed to building a region where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

He led with kindness, generosity and purpose. He showed up for this organization, for our partners and for the community time and time again because at his core Joaquin simply wanted to help people.

His legacy will live on in the work we continue and in the lives he touched. We are devastated by this loss, and our hearts are with Joaquin’s family, loved ones and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

United Way Kids Read brought the joy of storytelling to Washington Unified School District this Wednesday. 415 students received their own copy of The Environmental Crusader Could Be Me, and author Enrique Baeza joined us to read the book and inspire young minds.

Thank you to Washington Unified School District and Enrique Baeza for your partnership and commitment to helping build strong readers. Reading fuels confidence, sparks curiosity, and lays the foundation for lifelong learning and together, we’re giving students the tools to thrive.

May is Foster Youth Awareness Month, and we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible foster youth we support through Women United at United Way California Capital Region.
All month long, we’re celebrating their achievements the milestones they’ve reached, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the bright futures they’re building. Their resilience inspires our work every single day.

Women United walks alongside foster youth by providing mentorship, life‑skills support, academic guidance, and meaningful connections that help them thrive during and after their time in care.

And there’s a place for you in this work.
Whether you choose to mentor, volunteer, advocate, or support our programs, your involvement directly strengthens opportunities for foster youth across our region.
