At the June 4 Meeting of the SCUSD Board of Education, the Board recognized Ethel Phillips students Suhaylah Tapia and Hanna Robles as our Stellar Students!
Suhayla was identified as a GATE student, and participated in the Early Exit Transitional Bilingual Program at E. Phillips. She is a fantastic older sister and has been a model student for many years. She has been doing jiu-jitsu for a year and a half and won Gold at her last tournament. Her dad tells us that she car read and write Arabic and is able to read the Quran proficiently. Suhayla is considerate and always willing to lend a hand. She was elected to represent her grade on the Community School Implementation Team of E. Phillips.
Hanna is also identified as a GATE student, and joined Ethel Phillips as a first grader with very little English. School was scary, and at one point she struggled making friends. Now, Hanna is a 4th grader that captained the Ethel Phillips basketball team. She became interested in Basketball from our after school program and this year joined the girls team, but her family also supported her to practice with her as much as possible. She is kind, helpful and cares about the school community deeply. She was also elected as student representative of the Community School Implementation Team of Ethel Phillips.
Congratulations Suhaylah and Hanna!

At Hollywood Park Elementary’s Open House, Ms. Manda Newman’s Special Education classroom truly went all the way in with their incredible Solar System and Astronomy presentation and display. The classroom was transformed into an engaging, creative, and immersive learning environment that showcased not only the students’ hard work, but also the power of inclusive, hands-on learning experiences.
The students were proud, engaged, and excited to share their work with families and visitors. It was a beautiful example of how Special Education classrooms continue to create meaningful, innovative, and academically rich experiences for students.
