The Sacramento County Office of Economic Development, in partnership with SMUD, hosted a Business Walk in the South Sacramento environmental justice area, providing an opportunity for County leadership, staff, partners, and businesses to meet face-to-face to listen, learn, and identify ways to support business growth, retention, and long-term investment in the corridor. 🚶♀️💼
County Executive David Villanueva, Supervisor Patrick Kennedy, and Supervisor Phil Serna’s Office, joined the effort alongside County departments and partners in visiting and surveying 64 businesses, highlighting Sacramento County’s commitment to supporting businesses on the ground and strengthening relationships within our commercial corridors.
These conversations help us better understand real-time challenges and opportunities while connecting businesses with County programs, services, and resources that support long-term economic growth in our communities.

Sacramento County is currently exploring the implementation of Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKOs), a model authorized under California law that would allow individuals to prepare and sell meals directly from their homes.
The framework gives local jurisdictions the ability to permit and regulate small-scale, home-based food operations. If approved, this program would be permitted countywide, including within all cities.
As part of the consideration process, Sacramento County’s Environmental Management Department is hosting a workshop to provide additional information and gather public input. Discussion topics will include public health and food safety requirements, enforcement considerations, and potential impacts to existing food businesses and residential areas.
