The student test scores released this week show a substantial decline in academic progress since 2019, with a 4% drop in students meeting English standards and a 7% drop in students meeting math standards. Our state implemented the longest school closures of any in the nation, and our kids paid the price. This will go down as one of the greatest failures of leadership in California history.

This week my colleagues and I called on the Legislature to return to session to address three major issues affecting Californians:
1. Pass legislation to suspend the gas tax and provide relief from the nation's highest gas prices
2. Restore penalties for retail theft and reclassify crimes like domestic violence as violent felonies
3. Take action to solve our homelessness crisis and ban encampments near schools and daycares
It's time for real solutions to address the critical challenges facing our state.

Today Governor Newsom announced that he will end the COVID-19 State of Emergency on February 28, 2023, nearly three full years after it was put in place. It is past time to end the State of Emergency and focus on the enormous hardships Californians are facing in their daily lives: soaring gas and grocery prices, surging crime, and a homelessness problem that gets worse by the day.
Gavin Newsom will end California’s COVID state of emergency after more than 2 years California Republicans have repeatedly urged Newsom to cancel the state of emergency, saying it’s an overreach of power.

Last month I had the pleasure of presenting a resolution to Tiffany Andrews honoring the service of her son, Marine Sergeant Tyler Andrews, at the Warfighter Overwatch Patriot’s Gala in Folsom. On August 26, 2021, Sergeant Andrews was the most critically wounded Marine in the su***de bombing attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members and wounded 18 Marines. To date, Sergeant Andrews has undergone 43 surgeries at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I am thankful for his continued recovery and the work Warfighter Overwatch has done to support his family throughout the process. Our community is forever grateful for Sergeant Andrews’ dedication to duty and faithful service to his country.

Inflation was higher than expected in September at 8.2%. Meanwhile the Governor has proposed a new oil tax increase in December, which will further raise costs for consumers. This is the wrong solution for California.
US inflation rises more than expected in September Efforts to tame inflation in the US have pushed up the dollar and global borrowing costs.

For years freelancers have fought back against AB 5, California's infamous law passed in 2019 to restrict independent contracting and the right to earn a living. Californians across hundreds of professions lost their livelihoods when politicians put the needs of special interests above independent workers. We need to repeal AB 5 in California, not have it spread to the rest of the country.
California has a terrible labor law. The Biden administration wants to take it national Three years ago this month, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) into law, essentially outlawing freelance journalism and most other independent contracting. Opponen…

This week my colleagues and I sent a letter to Governor Newsom and legislative leadership calling on the following three actions to be taken immediately:
1. Call a special session to suspend the gas tax
2. Reject the proposed tax increase on oil producers
3. Audit where our gas tax dollars are being spent
Today California gas prices are $2.37 above the national average. We can't wait any longer to provide relief.

A new investigation by the New York Times reveals that at its current rate, California’s High Speed Rail project will cost $80 billion more taxpayer dollars than voters were initially promised and will not be completed this century. It’s time to end this boondoggle once and for all.
How California’s Bullet Train Went Off the Rails America’s first experiment with high-speed rail has become a multi-billion-dollar nightmare. Political compromises created a project so expensive that almost no one knows how it can be built as originally envisioned.

Today the average price of a gallon of gas in California is $6.39, $2.50 more than the national average and $1.11 more than it was just one month ago. Yet rather than calling a special session to suspend the gas tax and give California drivers immediate relief as I have called for, today the Governor decided to bring the Legislature back in December to raise taxes on oil producers. This will do nothing but increase costs on consumers who are already paying the highest costs in the nation.
Gov. Newsom to call special legislative session to impose windfall tax on oil companies Gov. Gavin Newsom will call state lawmakers back to Sacramento for a special session in response to rising gas prices.

After spending over $14 billion taxpayer dollars to address the issue, homelessness has grown 15% over the last 3 years. The Supermajority killed my request to audit all homelessness spending in California earlier this year, it’s time we revisit that immediately.
California's homeless population increased — again Despite billions being spent by the state, the California homeless population rose by 21,000 during the COVID pandemic.

Today the average gas price in California hit $6.29 per gallon, nearly $2.50 more than the national average. This is just 15 cents below the state’s record high of $6.44 set in June of this year and an increase of nearly 80 cents in the past week alone.
Californians need immediate relief from soaring gas prices, which we can provide by passing my bipartisan proposal to suspend the gas tax. Instead, Governor Newsom wants to increase taxes yet again. The Governor’s tax hike will make matters worse by restricting production and passing on costs to consumers in the form of higher gas prices. Californians simply cannot afford more backward policies.
Gavin Newsom says gas prices are skyrocketing. His solution? A new tax The governor says “greedy oil companies” are fleecing Californians and should pay for it.
