This footage from a recent structure fire shows the impact of vertical ventilation on a structure fire. Crews cut vent holes at the direction of interior members who needed increased visibility to get to the fire. Once the vent holes were cut, interior crews noticed a converted attic with hoarder conditions making application of water on the fire difficult.

Last Friday, Sacramento Fire crews responded to a fire at a flea market located on the 8500 block of Folsom Blvd. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions on arrival along with access and water supply challenges. Luckily, this was not during business hours so nobody was injured. 𝐒𝐀𝐂𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐑𝐎 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐓, thank you for the assistance extinguishing this fire and limiting the spread to other buildings on the property. This morning, family, friends and colleagues came together to celebrate Assistant Chief Pat Costamagna’s retirement after almost 30 years of service to Sacramento.

Pat’s journey began in August 1999 as a recruit in Fire Academy Class 99-2. Over the years, he served in the field, promoted through the ranks and found his way into Emergency Management and Urban Search & Rescue.

As the US&R Training Manager and later Assistant Chief of Special Operations, Pat played a key role in the training and development of our US&R teams and served as the Program Manager for California US&R Task Force 7 and the FEMA Western Division US&R Task Force Representative.

Among those celebrating with Pat this morning were his father, former Sacramento Fire Chief, and his brother, Fire Chief Chris Costamagna.

A career built on service, leadership and a commitment to making things better for those around him.

Join us in congratulating Assistant Chief Pat Costamagna and wishing him a long, happy and healthy retirement.
