It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles' family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.

CHP is reminding parents and caregivers that the right car seat or booster, properly installed and used every ride, can make a lifesaving difference.

If you’re in the downtown Sacramento area, you can schedule a free car seat installation or inspection with the CHP Capitol Protection Section by calling 916-341-4740. Appointments are conducted by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who can help make sure your child’s seat is installed correctly and fits them properly.

It's National "See Tracks? Think Train" Week!

Do you about the blue-and-white sign at every railroad crossing? 🔵⚪

The Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign provides a phone number and crossing ID to report problems or emergencies at the crossing.

If your vehicle gets stuck on the tracks, get out immediately, move away from the tracks, and call the number on the sign to get trains stopped. If you can't find the sign, call 9-1-1.

Know the sign and know what to do. Stay safe around railroad tracks.

To help keep California's roads safe, CHP is conducting a Labor Day Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP) from 6:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, through 11:59 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7. During the HEP, CHP officers statewide will focus on removing impaired drivers from the road and educating motorists about the dangers of driving under the influence.
