California Department of Education California will provide a world-class education for all students, from early childhood to adulthood.

The California Department of Education (CDE) oversees the state's diverse and dynamic public school system, which is responsible for the education of more than seven million children and young adults in more than 9,000 schools. The CDE and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction are responsible for enforcing education law and regulations; and for continuing to reform and improve public elementary school programs, secondary school programs, adult education, some preschool programs, and child care programs. The CDE's mission is to provide leadership, assistance, oversight, and resources so that every Californian has access to an education that meets world-class standards. The CDE is committed to working in partnership with local schools to improve student achievement.

New Data Shows Continued Progress for CA Students! 📈🚀

California students continued to make progress across key measures of student success during the 2025–26 school year, with statewide assessment scores increasing in English, math, and science!

The statewide graduation rate reached a high of 87.9 percent, and a larger share of students were prepared for college and careers by their schools and districts. In addition, the chronic absenteeism rates dropped further, and the suspension rate declined for the third consecutive year.

“Over the past eight years, we’ve helped expand transitional kindergarten, strengthened community schools and expanded learning opportunities, and championed financial literacy and paid internships to better prepare students for their futures,” said California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “These investments have laid an important foundation, but we must do more to translate them into stronger academic outcomes.”
