This week was a tough one for Officer Smith and retired K9 Kai. A few days ago, Officer Smith brought K9 Kai to the incredible veterinarians at VCA Sac after K9 Kai started showing some concerning symptoms of a medical issue. Kai was quickly diagnosed and VCA conducted emergency surgery, removing a large tumor that was causing a blood infection.
Thanks to the incredible supporters of our association, we were able to decisively fund this operation and get K9 Kai to where he is now, at home with Officer Smith with a full recovery on the horizon.

K9 Kai
K9 Kai hit the streets in 2017 and spent the next 3 years providing full service to the Sacramento Community through assisting Patrol Officers, specialty units, and other agencies, all while making time to stop in and connect with the community on a daily basis.
In 2021 K9 Kai retired. K9 Kai remains energetic as ever in his retired days where he loves road trips, playing ball, going for a run, and being with the family.
Your contributions are paramount to the success of our association and our ability to provide retired police dogs with services to make their retirements comfortable, healthy, and happy.

K9 Kona, a German Shepherd Dog acquired by the Sacramento Police Department on September 4th, 2014 at 18 months old. Kona served his handler and the citizens of Sacramento for several years before his retirement. Kona came to work everyday with energy an enthusiasm. He never complained or called in sick, though he occasionally asked to drive the police car. Kona is exceptionally eager to please anyone willing to give him a pet behind the ears. He was deemed the “Team S.W.A.T. Dog” as he would listen to anyone and was a pleasure to handle. A testament to his discipline and training. On May 12th, 2021, K9 Kona entered a life of leisure where he now lounges on his living room pillow or in the sun of the backyard, still spry and ready to return to work at a moment’s notice. He barely looks half his age and has maintained a high level of agility for a dog of his years. But don’t let his energy fool you as his affection is contagious and draws you in. He is as docile as they come and is now a true family dog.

K9 Rollo 🐾
SPD K9 Rollo served the City of Sacramento for 9 years. After he retired with his handler and family at home, his days consisted of many naps and swimming in the pool. Rollo enjoyed his retired life, but his heart was ‘going to work’ and he immediately perked up if he heard a police siren or helicopter.
During Rollo’s time in service, his care was covered by the Police Department and City. However once retired, he was fortunate to have the benefits of the Sacramento Police Canine Association - where all SPD retired canines receive lifelong food, medical, and veterinary expenses.
During Rollo’s retired years he needed an emergency surgery for a life-threatening condition, as well as another surgery to remove a mass in his spine. Both of these surgeries bought K9 Rollo ‘more time.’ More time with his handler at home, and more time to enjoy his days of well-earned retirement.
The SPD K9 Association also provides burial arrangements and internment for all SPD working dogs. K9 Rollo and all other SPD canines are buried at East Lawn’s Garden of Valor in the Sierra Hills Pet Cemetery.
