It is with profound sorrow that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Miguel Cano, ID 23555.
In the early morning hours of July 2, 2025, at approximately 0028 hours, Officer Cano, faithfully serving the West Los Angeles Area, suffered a suspected medical emergency while on patrol. Tragically, his vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree.
Emergency personnel responded without delay, and Officer Cano was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Despite exhaustive life-saving measures, he was pronounced deceased at 0140 hours.
Officer Cano was a dedicated public servant who embodied the values of courage, commitment, and compassion. His service to the people of California will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife and devoted parents. The California Highway Patrol offers its deepest condolences to Officer Cano’s family, friends, and fellow officers. We honor the legacy of a hero who gave his all in service to others.

Commercial Vehicle Section recently partnered with Drivewyze to provide safety messages to drivers via the ELDs in commercial vehicles. As you enter California and at other designated locations in the state you might notice messages displayed on your ELDs, reminding you to watch your speed or making you aware of road conditions.

Yesterday Commercial Vehicle Section attended the Calexico Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facilities annual Industry Appreciation Day. This event was attended by our partners from Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, CBP, Mexico, and more importantly commercial drivers. This is the biggest event in the state and it was great talking to our partners and drivers during the event. We hope to see everyone there next year. If you haven’t attended this event follow chp_calexico for info on next year’s event.

It’s called the Dangerous placard because it’s dangerous to use it. The Dangerous placard can only be used when transporting non-bulk material and more than one Table 2 hazard class material. If transporting 2,205 pounds of more of one hazard class the Dangerous placard can’t be used for that hazard class. This shipment was transporting only hazard class 8 (corrosive) material. Make sure to review the shipping papers and placards during your pre-trip inspection.

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨
Phone scammers are posing as “AMBER Alert representatives”, offering to “register” your children. They ask for confidential info and to meet at your home. This is NOT how the AMBER Alert system works!
🔹 The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is the only agency authorized to activate AMBER Alerts—no registration is required.
🔹 Never provide personal information or answer calls from unknown or “possible scam” numbers.
🔹 If you’ve been contacted by a scammer, report it to your local law enforcement agency immediately.
Stay informed and protect yourself!

CHP CVS collaborates with region and national emergency responders through the Continuing Challenge Annual Hazmat Workshop (hazmat.org). This year Sergeant Adam Roha shared his wealth of knowledge on hazardous materials transportation with attendees of the workshop. His class educated responders on how to interpret hazard communication encountered at incidents involving the transportation of hazardous materials. The beat way to respond safely to incidents is to recognize the hazards as you approach.
