Today is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day, which honors long-term survivors of HIV and increases visibility of their needs, health issues, and journeys. The annual observance falls on June 5th, which is the anniversary of the first 5 reported cases of what later became known as AIDS, in 1981.

Shouting out Marsha P. Johnson again this year, but for Pride Month! Marsha P. Johnson’s activism was rooted in love, mutual aid, and radical care. As a black transgender woman, she is considered by many to be an important figure in the LGBTQ and transgender rights movements due to her involvement in the Stonewall Riots, her HIV/AIDS activism, and her role as one of the founders (alongside Sylvia Rivera) of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR).

Spotlighting Keith Haring for this year's Pride Month! He was an American artist and activist whose bold, graphic imagery became a widely recognized visual language and style. Between 1982 and 1989, Haring created more than 50 public murals, many of them voluntarily for hospitals, schools, and community spaces. He was diagnosed with HIV in 1987 and later with AIDS in the autumn of 1988. He used his art and imagery during the last years of his life to speak about his illness and to generate activism and awareness about HIV/AIDS. Much of his work also addressed other ongoing political and social issues, which included anti-apartheid activism, the crack epidemic, homos*xuality, and safe s*x.

Spotlighting Dr. David D. Ho for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
He is a Taiwanese-American physician-scientist and virologist who is known for his contributions to HIV/AIDS research in the mid-1990s. Dr. Ho pioneered the use of combination anti-retroviral therapy instead of single therapy in the treatment of HIV, which transformed it from a terminal disease into a chronic disease.
