In one of the wealthiest and most innovative regions in the world, it is a moral outrage that we have not found a way to keep more vulnerable children safe. Too many children known to our child-welfare system have died. Each had a name, a family and a future.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney is calling for a new approach to keeping kids safe.

At least six children involved with Santa Clara County’s DFCS have died in the past four years. Each death is a profound loss. My Office will share ideas with county leaders in the hope of contributing to our collective work to prevent further tragedies.

My hope is that our next press conference will be about the substantive and collaborative steps we are taking to save children’s lives, rather than our response to the heartbreaking loss of another child.

There is perhaps no greater threat to human justice than allowing machine intelligence to decide it. There is simply no upside to AI choosing which crimes to investigate, which charges to bring, how to prosecute cases, whether someone is guilty or innocent, or what sentence to impose.

These are profoundly human decisions that require the power of human intelligence, the discernment of the human heart, and the wisdom of the human spirit. Once we surrender those fundamental responsibilities, we can never go back.

Diane Peterson stayed behind to clean her classroom at Branham High School. Her life was taken that day in 1978, leaving her family and community with unanswered questions for nearly five decades.

This mini-documentary from the YouTube channel Cold Cases Solved recounts the search for her killer—and the family member’s tip that helped our Office’s Cold Case Unit and the San Jose Police Department solve her murder in 2025.

I wish Diane were alive today. Although her killer is deceased and cannot face justice, I hope these answers bring her loved ones a measure of peace.

I’m proud of our Office’s Cold Case Unit and our partners at SJPD for their persistence. Time does not diminish our responsibility to seek the truth. Every victim matters. Every family deserves answers. (Complete documentary in comments)

Earlier this week, I gave a presentation to criminal justice professionals at the Law Enforcement Leaders (LEL) Conference at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law I spoke about our office’s successful efforts to implement Gun Violence Restraining Orders , also known as . We have been a national leader in using GVROs to prevent gun violence.

Red flag laws are a powerful tool for saving lives. They provide a legal process to temporarily remove fi****ms from people who pose a serious risk of harming themselves or others, while protecting due process and Second Amendment rights.

A great chance to discuss meaningful criminal justice reforms, which is a favorite topic!

This is a bittersweet moment as I announce the guilty plea of Santa Clara County’s former undersheriff to bribery. Bitter, because any abuse of law-enforcement power betrays the public trust and threatens our right to free and fair elections. Sweet, because justice has prevailed. Our freedom depends on the rule of law—and no title, badge, or position places anyone above it. & for all!

The more we learn, the more disturbing this scandal becomes. We cannot fix the dysfunction until those responsible are held accountable. Children are dying. There is no time for excuses.

The report found “significant systemic gaps” in documenting key safety-related responsibilities and outlined “concerns that create risks to child safety and well-being.”
