October is National Arts & Humanities Month!

Across California, the arts and humanities bring us together. They help us share stories, learn
from one another, and better understand the places we call home.

This year, California Humanities, California for the Arts, the California State Library, and
the California Arts Council are coming together to celebrate COMMON GROUND and the
connections we create through the tapestry of California’s diverse stories.

All month long, we’ll share stories, events, and ideas from across California.

Common ground is something we create together.

California is investing in the people and places that make our state creative.

A new state budget measure includes $4 million for California Cultural Districts and $10 million for general operating support grants for arts organizations. These investments will help communities celebrate their cultural heritage and give arts organizations flexible support for their people, programs and work.

We’re thankful to Governor Gavin Newsom and the Legislature for this commitment during the California Arts Council’s 50th anniversary year. Grant guidelines and timelines will be shared as they become available.

Surrounded by redwoods and rooted in creativity, the Eureka Cultural Arts District is home to murals, theaters, galleries, museums, artist studios, local food and so much more.

And this month, the district is bringing it all together for its first-ever Culture Commons Festival, September 25–27! The three-day celebration will feature programming across the district, with every event free and open to all ages.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Los Angeles for the National Endowment for the Arts Grants Workshop!

Artists and arts organizations came together to learn more about federal funding opportunities, strengthen their grant knowledge, and connect with resources available at the federal, state, county, and local levels.

We were grateful to welcome partners from the National Endowment for the Arts, Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture , and Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, and to close the afternoon with remarks from NEA Chairman Mary Anne Carter.

Thank you to our partners and everyone who joined us at the The Vision Theatre for making this free workshop possible.

Taking a look back to when Michelle Radmand, Chief Deputy Director, CAC, joined the Inland Prosperity Conference in Riverside, hosted by the Inland Empire Women's Business Center , for a conversation about what women-owned and small businesses are building across the region.

"I appreciated the opportunity to highlight the connection between small business and California’s creative economy—and the important role Women’s Business Centers play in helping entrepreneurs grow."

"It was also fitting to have this conversation in Riverside, home to the newly state-designated Arts and Culture District, which brings together galleries, theaters, studios, cultural spaces, artists and performers in the heart of downtown."

The American Indian Cultural District (AICD) in Yelamu (San Francisco) celebrates American Indian culture, history, art, and community through cultural activations, gathering spaces, and initiatives that uplift the Bay Area’s American Indian community.

📍 The AICD is located on unceded Ramaytush Ohlone land in what is now known as the Mission neighborhood.
