They showed up when it wasn’t safe, or comfortable, or popular. In 1979, more than 500 people marched in Sacramento’s very first Pride, making history.
Just one year earlier, in 1978, our community laid another foundation. What began as the Lambda Community Fund, a small assistance program, would grow into the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, the oldest nonprofit in the region dedicated to serving LGBTQ+ people. Rev. Jerry Sloan helped make that possible.
In 1984, after a national televangelist denied making hateful statements about q***r people on television, Sloan took action. He tracked down the tapes, demanded accountability, and when it was denied, he sued and won alongside legal pioneer Rosemary Metrailer. He then reinvested that money into the community, helping transform the Lambda Community Fund into something lasting.
He believed our community deserved more than survival. He built spaces where we could belong.
And years later, before his passing, he continued to roll through Pride, still showing up, still reminding us what courage looks like.
Sacramento, this is your history. On Sunday, June 14, starting at 11 a.m. from Southside Park, you can witness and cheer us on in solidarity as we and hundreds of other marchers travel down 10th Street toward the Capitol. The march is free to watch. Visit https://sacramentopride.org/pride-march/ to learn more.
