California State Capitol Building

It’s fire season. It’s vital that Californians reduce their wildfire risks. Each year hundreds of brave firefighters work hard to protect our communities. Capitol Park is home to a memorial honoring those who lost their lives in the fire service.

Please pardon our mess during construction of a safer & greener Capitol Annex building. Our Capitol West Wing remains open! Engage with your government, learn, & enjoy the beauty of the awe inspiring artistic details that tell California’s history and story throughout.

Adjacent to the L St. Entrance to the Capitol, visitors can find the Moon Tree, grown from a seed that orbited the moon during the Apollo 14 mission. Much care is being taken to ensure the trees are protected as the project moves forward!

The beautiful cast aluminum panels that represent CA Industry, flora and fauna that were installed on the outside of the East entry to the Annex, known as the Malmquist Panels, have been sent to be re-finished and stored for eventual display in the new building.

Legislators are currently finishing up their legislative work for the year! The deadline to pass bills to the Governor is August 31st. In this archived photo from 1927 we can see Assemblymembers hard at work doing the public’s work!

41st CA Lt. Gov., Mervyn Dymally, who was also the first Black member of US House of Representative. This bust was located in the East entry to the Annex. This beloved memorial is being housed in an archival environment until its return to public display.

Tiles that made up the Eureka display at the entry of the Lt. Gov’s office are one of four such original displays of tile groupings. They were individually removed and relocated to a conservation specialist to be cleaned then stored to be returned to the new building for display.

Exhibit rooms are open in the State Capitol West Wing! Step into a time machine and visit the Capitol in 1902. Or, visit the CA State Parks exhibit rooms about the rich history of Californian icons and symbols!

The Bookstore and Gift Shop remains open in the historic Capitol West Wing! Make sure to take home a great souvenir or piece of original artwork to support California’s artists and Developmental Disabilities Services.

Historic West Steps of the have long been a venue for civic engagement. Perched above lines of old Deodor Cedar trees and Capitol Mall, the Capitol Annex Project will protect these historic steps, trees & views in this important gathering place.

The public and employees can enjoy delicious ready-made food from Statehouse Restaurant on the third floor. Seating indoors and on verandas offer restful eating and meeting areas.
