Dedicated to the 2951 Combat Logistics Support Squadron, re-designated 1 Oct 1992 as 652 Combat Logi The A-10 was, and still is, a survivor.
The 2951 CLSS repaired aircraft battle damages during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, primarily damages to the A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” in Saudi Arabia as they received the majority of damage. Some battle damages required major depot-level work, which is what we in CLSS do, so we were pretty much at home with it, albeit with a lot of make-shift equipment. The A-10's GAU-8/A is 19 ft 10.5 in (6.06 m) long and weighs around 1,828 kg (4,030 lb). Each GAU-8/A shell (that's loaded in that white drum in the photo) has a weight of between 15.0 oz (425 grams) to 12.7 oz (360 grams), and is about the size of a regular coke bottle. It's one of the most powerful weapons there is.
